{"id":31770,"date":"2021-11-16T16:02:39","date_gmt":"2021-11-16T16:02:39","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/newsblogsnew.ihbc.org.uk\/?p=31770"},"modified":"2021-11-15T16:23:07","modified_gmt":"2021-11-15T16:23:07","slug":"seven-abandoned-railways-set-to-follow-dartmoor-line-back-into-service","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/newsblogs.ihbc.org.uk\/?p=31770","title":{"rendered":"Seven abandoned railways set to follow Dartmoor line back into service"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"post_first_paragraph\">\n<h3><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright  wp-image-13658\" src=\"https:\/\/newsblogs.ihbc.org.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/09\/general_trains.jpg\" alt=\"trains\" width=\"295\" height=\"166\" \/>New Civil Engineer has offered updates on the new schemes set to be rvioved as part of the government\u2019s Restoring Your Railway fund, launched in January 2020.<\/h3>\n<h6><em>image: for illustration puposes only<\/em><\/h6>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<h2 style=\"padding-left: 40px;\"><em><span style=\"color: #800080;\">&#8230;successful proposals to be awarded up to \u00a350,000&#8230;<\/span><\/em><\/h2>\n<p>New Civil Engineer writes (18 Oct 2021):<\/p>\n<p>Last week the Dartmoor line, connecting Okehampton to Exeter,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.newcivilengineer.com\/latest\/how-engineers-restored-the-abandoned-dartmoor-railway-line-in-just-nine-months-12-10-2021\/\">became the first former line to open<\/a>\u00a0under the government\u2019s Restoring Your Railway fund,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.newcivilengineer.com\/latest\/network-rail-seeks-contractors-to-restore-abandoned-portishead-rail-line-19-02-2021\/\">launched in January 2020 to reinstate axed local services and restore closed stations.<\/a><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>It is the first of a number of schemes to revive abandoned routes, with\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.newcivilengineer.com\/latest\/network-rail-chief-tips-restoration-of-abandoned-lines-as-key-to-industrys-future-30-04-2021\/\">Network Rail chief executive Andrew Haines emphasising that restoring such lines is among key solutions to secure the future of the industry given the pandemic-driven decrease in commuting.<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Many of these schemes fall under the Department for Transport (DfT)&#8217;s Restoring your Railways Fund.<\/p>\n<p>In March the DfT revealed the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.newcivilengineer.com\/latest\/in-full-the-85-abandoned-rail-schemes-vying-for-restoration-funding-16-03-2021\/\">85 rail schemes competing for investment under the third and final round of the fund,<\/a>\u00a0with successful proposals to be awarded up to \u00a350,000 each to progress plans to reinstate stations and restore passenger services closed during the Beeching cuts.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.newcivilengineer.com\/latest\/15-abandoned-rail-schemes-win-funding-to-be-restored-to-former-glory-30-11-2020\/\">In the last funding round, backers of 15 proposals were awarded cash to develop their business cases.<\/a>\u00a0Ten schemes won backing in the first round.<\/p>\n<p>Here is a rundown of the next routes set to be given a new lease of life&#8230;.<\/p>\n<p>[Northumberland line, York to Beverley line, Levenmouth rail link, Portishead line]<\/p>\n<h3><strong>Three other recommendations<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>Transport thinktank Greengauge21 has also thrown its support behind three other &#8220;missing&#8221;
