{"id":31376,"date":"2021-10-08T17:27:12","date_gmt":"2021-10-08T16:27:12","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/newsblogsnew.ihbc.org.uk\/?p=31376"},"modified":"2021-10-08T17:27:12","modified_gmt":"2021-10-08T16:27:12","slug":"edinburghs-royal-high-school-to-become-55m-national-centre-for-music","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/newsblogs.ihbc.org.uk\/?p=31376","title":{"rendered":"Edinburgh\u2019s Royal High School to become \u2018\u00a355M national centre for music\u2019"},"content":{"rendered":"<h3><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-18966\" src=\"https:\/\/newsblogs.ihbc.org.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/05\/Calton-Hill-and-Old-Royal-High-School-Edinburgh-Courtesy-Cockburn-Association-300x153.png\" alt=\"buildings\" width=\"300\" height=\"153\" \/>The former Royal High School building in Edinburgh is to be transformed into a \u00a355 million national centre for music after the City of Edinburgh Council agreed to the lease of the historic property.<\/h3>\n<h6><em>image: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cockburnassociation.org.uk\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Cockburn Association<\/a><\/em><\/h6>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<h2 style=\"padding-left: 40px;\"><em><span style=\"color: #800080;\">\u2026 ambitions evolved into a vision for a new National Centre for Music with clearly defined spaces for classical music education, community access\u2026<\/span><\/em><\/h2>\n<p><em>Scottish Construction Now<\/em> writes (7 Oct 2021):<\/p>\n<p>Councillors on the Finance and Resources Committee\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/democracy.edinburgh.gov.uk\/documents\/s37834\/7.12%20-%20Former%20Royal%20High%20School%20Regent%20Road%20Edinburgh%20.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">today approved<\/a>\u00a0a proposal by the\u00a0Royal High School Preservation Trust\u00a0(RHSPT) for\u00a0a long lease of the property.<\/p>\n<p>Submitted in response to the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.scottishconstructionnow.com\/article\/edinburgh-puts-former-royal-high-school-on-open-market\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">council\u2019s search for a long-term use for the old Royal High School<\/a>,\u00a0the RHSPT\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/scottishconstructionnow.com\/article\/national-music-centre-back-on-agenda-for-royal-high-school\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">put forward<\/a>\u00a0new detailed proposals for the restoration of the iconic Thomas Hamilton building on Calton Hill as a \u201cworld-class centre for music education and public performance for the benefit of the whole of Scotland\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>The Trust said its ambitions evolved into a vision for a new National Centre for Music with clearly defined spaces for classical music education, community access and engagement and performance.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>St Mary\u2019s Music School, which\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.scottishconstructionnow.com\/article\/music-school-plan-for-royal-high-school-gains-full-council-approval\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">received unanimous planning approval<\/a>\u00a0by Edinburgh councillors in 2016, remains at the heart of the proposal.
