For some time we have been prompting their trustees to manage risk as employers through more transparent recruitment and advertising processes – including using the targeted and cost-effective service from the IHBC typically used by conservation professionals. So this round it is especially gratifying to see from The Dulwich Estate – ‘a charity established in 1619’ -a call for Building Surveyor (‘Architects also considered’) – and for a Heritage Advisor from the Canal & River Trust, and from the Fife Historic Buildings Trust, with a focus on pro-active project work, a post as Project Development Officer.

This round the private sector captures best the different disciplines encompassed within the diverse scope of conservation practice, as Cotswold Archaeology seeks a ‘Principal / Senior Heritage Consultant; and RPS an Associate Director ‘Archaeological’. At Hutton + Rostron there is a call for a ’Specialist Historic Building Surveyor’ and at Montagu Evans one for a ‘Senior Historic Environment & Townscape Advisor’.

Project regeneration posts linked to Heritage Action Zone (HAZ)-style roles in England, are not evident in this round. Such posts had been linked to major new infrastructure investment – the defining factor for built historic environment roles as employers responded to the government’s (and governments’) loose fiscal policies as driven by COVID-19. Instead more familiar – and generic – roles are evident in private sector employers, as they seek combinations of more general planning and more focussed heritage skills sets, including Heritage Consultants at Purcell, Fuller Long and Lichfields, the Historic Environment Consultant role at LUC and the call for a Director – Built Heritage at RPS.

In summary, recent posts include those below (all with different application dates, some closed and with external links inactive):

Gateshead Council: Local Heritage Project Officer

Cotswold Archaeology: Principal / Senior Heritage Consultant

East Riding of Yorkshire Council: Conservation Officer

Herefordshire Council: Principal Built Environment Officer (Building Conservation)

Canal &
