IHBC Director Sean O\u2019Reilly said: \u2018Our recent \u2018<\/em>Jobs etc<\/em><\/a>\u2019 <\/em>service posts <\/em>capture a familiarly wide spectrum of roles that range across all the skills areas encompassed in the<\/em> IHBC Areas of Competence<\/em><\/a> and the Conservation Cycle<\/a>.\u00a0 These areas are detailed in our MATE<\/a> application support sessions and guidance, and reflect the integrated model we use to assess interdisciplinary competence in line with international conservation practice standards.<\/p>\n

Jobs in the public sector typically show that the classic interdisciplinary Conservation Officer-styled roles loom as large as ever, even with if with a wider breadth of primary disciplines than usual.\u00a0 These demand skills from right across the IHBC Areas of Competence<\/a> and in this round are well represented by the Conservation Officer posts in from Yorkshire and Conwy.<\/p>\n

Related local government roles that focus on evaluating and managing change in listed fabric include posts at Buckinghamshire (Heritage Officer), Gateshead \u2018Local Heritage Project Officer and Herefordshire (Principal Built Environment Officer (Building Conservation)).\u00a0 Similar formal local government roles in planning with overlaps to conservation include Cardiff\u2019s call for a \u2018Planner (Placemaking) and Islington post of Career Grade Planning Officer (Conservation).<\/p>\n

For some time we have been prompting their trustees to manage risk as employers through more transparent recruitment and advertising processes \u2013 including using the targeted and cost-effective service from the IHBC typically used by conservation professionals.\u00a0 So this round it is especially gratifying to see from The Dulwich Estate \u2013 \u2018a charity established in 1619\u2019 -a call for Building Surveyor (\u2018Architects also considered\u2019) \u2013 and for a Heritage Advisor from the Canal & River Trust, and from the Fife Historic Buildings Trust, with a focus on pro-active project work, a post as Project Development Officer.<\/p>\n

This round the private sector captures best the different disciplines encompassed within the diverse scope of conservation practice, as Cotswold Archaeology seeks a \u2018Principal \/ Senior Heritage Consultant; and RPS an Associate Director \u2018Archaeological\u2019.\u00a0 At Hutton + Rostron there is a call for a \u2019Specialist Historic Building Surveyor\u2019 and at Montagu Evans one for a \u2018Senior Historic Environment & Townscape Advisor\u2019.<\/p>\n

Project regeneration posts linked to Heritage Action Zone (HAZ)-style roles in England, are not evident in this round.\u00a0 Such posts had been linked to major new infrastructure investment – the defining factor for built historic environment roles as employers responded to the government\u2019s (and governments\u2019) loose fiscal policies as driven by COVID-19.\u00a0 Instead more familiar \u2013 and generic – roles are evident in private sector employers, as they seek combinations of more general planning and more focussed heritage skills sets, including Heritage Consultants at Purcell, Fuller Long and Lichfields, the Historic Environment Consultant role at LUC and the call for a Director \u2013 Built Heritage at RPS.<\/p>\n
