Following on from a question posed at this year’s IHBC Annual School – Brighton 2021 regarding the influence Jane Jacobs had on urban design and planning, why not re-read the article which appeared in Context 167<\/em><\/a> earlier in the year?<\/p>\n

The review of Peter Laurence’s book [reposted from <\/em>Designing Buildings Wiki (DBW) \u2013 host platform for the IHBC\u2019s <\/em>Conservation Wiki<\/em><\/a>] <\/em>writes:<\/em><\/p>\n

…A few years ago the Urban Design<\/a> Group asked its members<\/a> to name the person, living or dead, whose contribution to urban design<\/a> and planning<\/a> they most admired. A large majority chose Jane Jacobs (1916\u20132006), the campaigner and writer best known for her 1961 book \u2018The Death and Life<\/a> of Great American Cities<\/a>\u2019. Jacobs was neither an architect<\/a> nor a planner<\/a>, and she had no university<\/a> education. Who was she?<\/p>\n

\u2026her examination of the places<\/a> that were being built<\/a> persuaded her that contemporary planning<\/a> was fatally flawed\u2026<\/span><\/em><\/h2>\n

Peter L Laurence answers that question with this magnificent intellectual biography of the first half of Jacobs\u2019 life<\/a>. As an architectural<\/a> writer, based at that time in New York, she at first subscribed to the beliefs<\/a> of many architects<\/a> and planners<\/a> in modernism<\/a> and large-scale<\/a> redevelopment. Gradually, though, her examination of the places<\/a> that were being built<\/a> persuaded her that contemporary planning<\/a> was fatally flawed….<\/p>\n
