{"id":30433,"date":"2021-06-29T16:41:53","date_gmt":"2021-06-29T15:41:53","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/newsblogsnew.ihbc.org.uk\/?p=30433"},"modified":"2021-06-29T16:41:53","modified_gmt":"2021-06-29T15:41:53","slug":"1-1-million-funding-for-cardiffs-flat-holm-island-heritage-and-wildlife","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/newsblogs.ihbc.org.uk\/?p=30433","title":{"rendered":"\u00a31.1 million funding for Cardiff\u2019s Flat Holm island heritage and wildlife"},"content":{"rendered":"<h3><a href=\"https:\/\/newsblogs.ihbc.org.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/06\/640px-Flat_Holm_Aerial_Cardiff_Council_Flat-Holm-Project-CC-BY-3_0.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-full wp-image-30434\" src=\"https:\/\/newsblogs.ihbc.org.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/06\/640px-Flat_Holm_Aerial_Cardiff_Council_Flat-Holm-Project-CC-BY-3_0.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"175\" \/><\/a>Historic buildings on Flat Holm island will be repaired and renovated, island habitats improved for wildlife <em>etc.<\/em>, after the island\u2019s owners, Cardiff Council, secured more than \u00a3600K of funding from the National Lottery Heritage Fund.<\/h3>\n<h6><em>image: for illustration purposes only<\/em><br \/>\n<em>By Cardiff Council &#8211; Cardiff Council Flat Holm Project, CC BY 3.0, https:\/\/commons.wikimedia.org\/w\/index.php?curid=3887590<\/em><\/h6>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<h2 style=\"padding-left: 40px;\"><em><span style=\"color: #800080;\">\u00a0\u2026 celebrate \u2018Marconi Day\u2026<\/span><\/em><\/h2>\n<h2 style=\"padding-left: 40px;\"><em><span style=\"color: #800080;\">\u2026 project also aims to provide \u2026. increased volunteer engagement\u2026<\/span><\/em><\/h2>\n<p>The <em>Cardiff News Room<\/em> writes:<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The \u2018Flat Holm: A Walk Through Time\u2019 project, which will now also benefit from \u00a3200,000 of capital funding from the council, alongside further investment from partner organisations including RSPB Cymru and the Flat Holm Society, seeks to breathe new life into the island and attract more visitors to this hidden jewel in the Bristol Channel.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The three year project includes:<\/p>\n<ul style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\n<li>extensive renovation of the Grade II-listed Fog Horn station.<\/li>\n<li>stabilisation of the cholera hospital and laundry buildings.<\/li>\n<li>repairs to the island\u2019s Victorian water catchment system.<\/li>\n<li>renovation of the WWII searchlight station to provide a \u2018seascape hide\u2019 \u2013 a quiet place for visitors to watch the sea, ships, and birds.<\/li>\n<li>improved habitats for the island\u2019s colony of Lesser Black-Backed Gulls and maritime flora.<\/li>\n<li>improved on-site interpretation to take visitors on a journey through the history of the island.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The project will also feature a number of photographic and arts projects as well as linking in with local authorities on the English side of the Bristol Channel to celebrate \u2018Marconi Day\u2019 and the island\u2019s links to Guglielmo Marconi, who sent the first wireless signals over open sea between the island and Lavernock Point.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Cabinet Member for Culture and Leisure, Cllr Peter Bradbury, said: \u201cThis funding from the National Lottery Heritage Fund is incredibly welcome and coupled with our investment, and that of our partners, will result in considerable improvements to the island.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cFlat Holm island is a hidden treasure right on Cardiff\u2019s doorstep \u2013 it\u2019s steeped in history that stretches from the Bronze Age all the way to the birth of modern communications technology, and as a Site of Special Scientific Interest, it\u2019s home to some unique flora and fauna. This project is all about preserving that heritage, protecting its rich wildlife, and bringing the island\u2019s fascinating stories to a wider audience.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">RSPB Cymru South Wales Area Manager, Cellan Michael, said: \u201cRSPB Cymru are delighted at the news that Cardiff Council\u2019s \u2018Flat Holm: A Walk Through Time\u2019 project has secured funding from the National Lottery Heritage Fund. We look forward to continuing to work with the Council, Flat Holm Society and others to conserve the wildlife of the island whilst helping as many people as possible to experience a site of such wildlife and heritage importance right on the city\u2019s doorstep. A key element will be supporting the development and delivery of a new plan to conserve the island\u2019s amazing wildlife, including the lesser black-backed gull colony as part of the island\u2019s \u2018Site of Special Scientific Interest\u2019.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Peter Sampson, Chairman of the Flat Holm Society, said \u201cThe Flat Holm Society is delighted that the NLHF Heritage Grant has been secured and we thank everyone in the Partnership who has worked so hard to make this happen. The grant, together with the all the other investment planned, will enable us to secure the island and its unique heritage for future generations, which has always been the aim of the Society.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The project also aims to provide opportunities for more school groups, communities and tourists to engage with or visit the island, as well as\u00a0increased volunteer engagement offering more opportunities to experience living and working on the island.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Flat Holm Society welcome new members.
