{"id":3035,"date":"2011-08-10T10:55:28","date_gmt":"2011-08-10T10:55:28","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/ihbconline.co.uk\/newsachive\/?p=3035"},"modified":"2011-08-10T10:55:28","modified_gmt":"2011-08-10T10:55:28","slug":"ihbc-in-cohort-of-concern-over-green-deal","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/newsblogs.ihbc.org.uk\/?p=3035","title":{"rendered":"IHBC in cohort of concern over Green Deal"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p id=\"yui_3_2_0_5_131297235400680\"><strong id=\"yui_3_2_0_5_131297235400674\"><br \/>\n<\/strong><\/p>\n<p id=\"yui_3_2_0_5_1312972354006167\"><span id=\"yui_3_2_0_5_1312972354006161\" style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">The Institute of Historic Building Conservation (IHBC), the UK\u2019s leading professional body for building and historic environment conservation specialists, is among the key conservation interests that have warned England\u2019s Energy Secretary Chris Huhne that the Green Deal, the Government\u2019s energy efficiency initiative, risks human health and the fabric of older buildings.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The coalition of organisations and individuals has written to Huhne and The Times pointing out that the drive to promote the complete thermal upgrading of pre-1919 buildings could result in \u2018expensive future problems for both building fabric and human health\u2019.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The group, which includes Mike Brown, IHBC\u2019s Policy Secretary, said: \u2018Inappropriate forms of insulation and the sealing up of interiors take little account of the fact that these buildings, which number millions, perform differently from modern ones and need to \u2018breathe&#8217;. They are likely to require a different approach, in particular with regard to the movement of moisture within them.\u2019<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The coalition includes the Society for the Protection of Ancient Buildings (SPAB), the National Trust, the Victorian Society and TV architectural guru Kevin McCloud.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Verdana;\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">The letter to the Times (copied to The Rt Hon Chris Huhne MP, Secretary of State Department for Energy and Climate Change) stated:<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>\u2018We are seriously concerned that the drive to promote the complete thermal upgrading of pre 1919 buildings could be storing up expensive future problems for both building fabric and human health. Inappropriate forms of insulation and the sealing up of interiors take little account of the fact that these buildings, which number millions, perform differently from modern ones and need to \u2018breathe\u2019. They are likely to require a different approach, in particular over the movement of moisture within them.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>While we strongly support the aim of reducing carbon emissions from the nation\u2019s building stock, we call on the Government to involve bodies knowledgeable about old buildings in research and planning for The Green ?Deal.
