IHBC Director Sean O\u2019Reilly said: \u2018Our recent \u2018Jobs etc<\/a>\u2019 service posts capture a familiarly wide spectrum of roles that range across all the skills areas encompassed in the IHBC Areas of Competence<\/em><\/a> and the Conservation Cycle<\/a>.\u00a0 These areas are detailed in our MATE<\/a> application support sessions and guidance, and reflect the integrated model we use to assess interdisciplinary competence in line with international conservation and project management practice standards.\u2019<\/p>\n

\u2018Jobs currently on offer in the public sector typically show that the classic interdisciplinary Conservation Officer-styled roles loom as large as ever, even if with a more diverse breadth of primary disciplines than usual.\u2019<\/p>\n

\u2018These demand skills from right across the IHBC Areas of Competence<\/a> and are well represented by the Swansea Senior Placemaking and Heritage Officer, with its broad planning agenda; Cheshire\u2018s Built Environment Officer (Conservation & Design); Argyll and Bute\u2019s \u2018Helensburgh CARS Project Officer\u2019 and Kings Lynn\u2019s Heritage Action Zone Programme Manager.\u2019<\/p>\n

Even more diverse skills sets are needed in conservation education.\u00a0 Typically host university departments shape their conservation focus in line with the primary disciplines represented there \u2013 so an architecture department seeks an architect for their conservation course, or archaeology departments an archaeologist.\u00a0 In that context it’s especially welcome to see the Weald & Downland Museum\u2019s posts for the IHBC-Recognised MSc course \u2018Programme Leader\u2019 as well as a \u2018Head of Learning\u2019.<\/p>\n

More nuanced variations in the balance of skills are especially evident in this round in a very welcome suite of posts from the Third Sector \u2013 including from charities, trusts and church bodies.\u00a0 This range highlights the success the IHBC has had in highlighting the risk management benefits of using our \u2018Jobs<\/em> etc.<\/em><\/a>\u2019 service. For some time we have explained how trustees can manage their risk as employers through transparent advertising \u2013 especially effective with the targeted and cost-effective service from the IHBC, so regularly used by the most dedicated conservation practitioners.<\/p>\n

So it is especially gratifying to see together the National Trust for Scotland\u2019s call for Surveyor\/Architect (x 2); Hampstead Garden Suburb Trust\u2019s call for an Architectural Support Officer, as well as The Trustees of The Dulwich Estate call for a Building Surveyor and the Covent Garden Area Trust\u2019s advertisement of a part-time post of Planning & Heritage Consultant.<\/p>\n

\u2018The risk management strategy of transparent recruitment processes is no less relevant to Church bodies, and recognised in the 3 Buildings Officer Posts on offer by The Diocese of Sheffield.<\/p>\n

Of course the private sector is much more familiar with this aspect of risk \u2013 being better acquainted with the need to invest in heritage specialists as well as the processes, as opposed to relying on enthusiasm.\u00a0 So private sector posts are regularly featured on our service for risk management considerations, made even more accessible by the great value offered by targeting the right candidates.<\/p>\n

For this round these sound practices are well demonstrated, at the same time as broad skills sets are being sought: WSP\u2019s search for a \u2018Heritage and Placemaking Specialist\u2019 (UK) makes and interesting complement to Donald Insall Associates\u2019 search for \u2018Assistant Researcher \/ Researcher \/ Historic Buildings Advisor\u2019. Similarly Turley Heritage\u2019s advertisement for \u2018Senior Consultants, Associate Directors and Directors, Heritage and Townscape is in striking contrast to RPS\u2019 specific call for an \u2018Associate Director \u2013 Heritage Planning\u2019.<\/p>\n
