For some time we have explained how trustees can manage their risk as employers through transparent advertising – especially effective with the targeted and cost-effective service from the IHBC, so regularly used by the most dedicated conservation practitioners.

So it is especially gratifying to see together the National Trust for Scotland’s call for Surveyor/Architect (x 2); Hampstead Garden Suburb Trust’s call for an Architectural Support Officer, as well as The Trustees of The Dulwich Estate call for a Building Surveyor and the Covent Garden Area Trust’s advertisement of a part-time post of Planning & Heritage Consultant.

‘The risk management strategy of transparent recruitment processes is no less relevant to Church bodies, and recognised in the 3 Buildings Officer Posts on offer by The Diocese of Sheffield.

Of course the private sector is much more familiar with this aspect of risk – being better acquainted with the need to invest in heritage specialists as well as the processes, as opposed to relying on enthusiasm. So private sector posts are regularly featured on our service for risk management considerations, made even more accessible by the great value offered by targeting the right candidates.

For this round these sound practices are well demonstrated, at the same time as broad skills sets are being sought: WSP’s search for a ‘Heritage and Placemaking Specialist’ (UK) makes and interesting complement to Donald Insall Associates’ search for ‘Assistant Researcher / Researcher / Historic Buildings Advisor’. Similarly Turley Heritage’s advertisement for ‘Senior Consultants, Associate Directors and Directors, Heritage and Townscape is in striking contrast to RPS’ specific call for an ‘Associate Director – Heritage Planning’.

In summary, recent posts include those below (all with different application dates, some closed and with external links inactive):

Gloucester City Council and Tewkesbury Borough Council: Heritage Engagement Officer

Cheshire West and Chester Council: Built Environment Officer (Conservation &
