London Festival of Architecture writes:<\/p>\n

The London Festival of Architecture, Cheapside Business Alliance and Aldgate Connect Business Improvement District have launched the fourth edition of the City Benches competition, which this year will see a new series of public benches installed across Cheapside, the City and Aldgate ahead of the London Festival of Architecture 2021.<\/p>\n

Architecture students, recent graduates and emerging architects or designers across all disciplines are invited to transform Cheapside and Aldgate\u2019s streetscape with an imaginative and witty take on much-needed public seating.<\/p>\n

As the project hopes to welcome commuters, visitors and Londoners back to the area in line with the Government\u2019s road map to easing England\u2019s lockdown restrictions, it offers the exciting opportunity to use sustainable and colourful elements to create a joyful space for the public to sit, relax and enjoy their surroundings, while adhering to any COVID-19 restrictions which may remain in place. In keeping with the Festival\u2019s 2021 theme of \u2018care\u2019, entrants are encouraged to think creatively about a new perspective on accessible design, considering how passers-by, workers and visitors with different access needs can interact with and make the most of the benches.<\/p>\n

The competition also seeks to continue public conversation around the impact of architecture at any scale, and a variety of locations will be identified across Cheapside and Aldgate, with the opportunity to tie into existing public realm and seating ambitions. Designs should therefore demonstrate clear ties to the local community and heritage of the area, celebrating and making a positive difference to their surrounding public realm<\/p>\n
