{"id":29347,"date":"2021-03-09T17:10:08","date_gmt":"2021-03-09T17:10:08","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/newsblogsnew.ihbc.org.uk\/?p=29347"},"modified":"2021-03-09T17:10:08","modified_gmt":"2021-03-09T17:10:08","slug":"ihbcs-hespr-special-interest-sector-news-pick-of-the-week-aj-on-the-most-corbusier-building-in-britain-now-gii-listed","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/newsblogs.ihbc.org.uk\/?p=29347","title":{"rendered":"IHBC\u2019s HESPR \u2018Special Interest Sector News\u2019 pick of the week: AJ on &#8216;The most Corbusier building in Britain&#8217;, now GII listed"},"content":{"rendered":"<h3><a href=\"https:\/\/newsblogs.ihbc.org.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/08\/HESPR-quality-mark-RGB-e1554484749512.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-19971 alignright\" src=\"https:\/\/newsblogs.ihbc.org.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/08\/HESPR-quality-mark-RGB-1024x468.jpg\" alt=\"logo\" width=\"308\" height=\"141\" \/><\/a>The IHBC\u2019s heritage business register HESPR \u2013 our <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ihbc.org.uk\/hespr\/\">Historic Environment Service Providers Recognition<\/a> quality assurance scheme for heritage services \u2013 emails members weekly \u2018<a href=\"https:\/\/ihbconline.co.uk\/newsachive\/?p=23522\"><em>News and Tender Alerts<\/em><\/a><em>\u2019<\/em>, with news from across the development sector, and this week features the <em>Architects\u2019 Journal<\/em> (<em>AJ<\/em>) on what it describes as &#8216;The most Corbusier building in Britain&#8217;!<strong>\u00a0<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<h2 style=\"padding-left: 40px;\"><em><span style=\"color: #800080;\"><strong>\u2026<\/strong>\u2018a striking and well-articulated example of post-war library design\u2019\u2026<\/span><\/em><\/h2>\n<p><em>AJ<\/em> writes:<\/p>\n<p>Saltash Library, completed in 1963 and designed by Royston Summers of Cornwall County Architects\u2019 Department, has been handed a Grade II listing.<\/p>\n<p>In an article in the AJ in 1987, Summers (<a href=\"https:\/\/ihbc.us2.list-manage.com\/track\/click?u=a070a4d0cff28adddef6cffe7&amp;id=d29cf0a972&amp;e=4961664373\">1931-2012<\/a>) described the library, which is still in use today, as \u2018the most Corbusier building in Britain\u2019.<\/p>\n<p>According to Historic England, the textured concrete structure is \u2018a striking and well-articulated example of post-war library design\u2019, drawing reference from famous Modernist architect Le Corbusier\u2019s Palace of Justice at Chandigarh, which began construction in 1951&#8230;.<\/p>\n<p>Summers\u2019 library was the only part of a proposed new Civic Centre scheme earmarked for the growing Longstone area, which was to have included a new guildhall, police station, county health clinic, council offices and council chamber.<\/p>\n<p>The listing citation states that the pale-grey concrete and white, rough rendering on the exterior of the library were designed to \u2018harmonise with the Cornish landscape\u2019.
