{"id":29328,"date":"2021-03-09T16:01:24","date_gmt":"2021-03-09T16:01:24","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/newsblogsnew.ihbc.org.uk\/?p=29328"},"modified":"2021-03-08T18:01:59","modified_gmt":"2021-03-08T18:01:59","slug":"dft-taskforce-sticks-by-claim-hammersmith-bridge-could-reopen-in-spring","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/newsblogs.ihbc.org.uk\/?p=29328","title":{"rendered":"DfT taskforce sticks by claim Hammersmith Bridge could reopen in spring"},"content":{"rendered":"<h3><a href=\"https:\/\/newsblogs.ihbc.org.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/03\/NCE_080321.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-full wp-image-29329\" src=\"https:\/\/newsblogs.ihbc.org.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/03\/NCE_080321.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"248\" \/><\/a>The Department for Transport\u2019s (DfT) Hammersmith Bridge taskforce has doubled down on its previous assertion that the embattled Victorian structure could be partially reopened, to pedestrians and cyclists, as early as April, once ongoing inspections of the western pedestals is completed.<\/h3>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<h2 style=\"padding-left: 40px;\"><em><span style=\"color: #800080;\">\u2026 crack in the bridge\u2019s cast iron pedestals had widened\u2026<\/span><\/em><\/h2>\n<h2 style=\"padding-left: 40px;\"><em><span style=\"color: #800080;\">\u2026 the public cannot be allowed to use the bridge until it is repaired\u2026<\/span><\/em><\/h2>\n<p><em>New Civil Engineering<\/em> writes:<\/p>\n<p>The bridge has been closed to all traffic since August after council leaders warned that the bridge faced \u201ccatastrophic collapse\u201d after engineers noted that a crack in the bridge\u2019s cast iron pedestals had widen&#8230;.<\/p>\n<p>&#8230;reports conclude that the bridge could be reopened to cyclists and pedestrians with minimal work needed.<\/p>\n<p>However,\u00a0Hammersmith Bridge\u2019s Board for the Case for the Continued Safe Operation (CCSO) \u2013 made up of engineers from Mott MacDonald, WSP, Xanta and the council itself \u2013 has since concluded that \u201cthe public cannot be allowed to use the bridge until it is repaired because it has proved to be unstable and still contains unknowable features\u201d.<\/p>\n<div id=\"newci-1944378195\" class=\"newci-inread-slot-1\" data-id=\"207540\">\n<div class=\"\"><span style=\"font-size: 16px;\">Despite this latest CCSO report, the Hammersmith Bridge Taskforce said that it \u201cbelieve[s] that \u2013 following blast cleaning and visual inspection, and if no further fractures are found on the western pedestals \u2013 evidence supports the potential reopening of the bridge to pedestrians and cyclists, in limited and controlled circumstances\u201d&#8230;.<\/span><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>Plans to develop a temporary ferry service at the site also continue to gather pace.
