{"id":29120,"date":"2021-02-12T17:25:26","date_gmt":"2021-02-12T17:25:26","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/newsblogsnew.ihbc.org.uk\/?p=29120"},"modified":"2023-11-14T17:21:33","modified_gmt":"2023-11-14T17:21:33","slug":"ihbc-features-heritage-from-the-doorstep-long-man-of-wilmington-chalk-man-vandalised-with-face-mask","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/newsblogs.ihbc.org.uk\/?p=29120","title":{"rendered":"IHBC features \u2018Heritage from the doorstep\u2019: Long Man of Wilmington chalk man vandalised with \u2018face mask\u2019"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"sc-fzokvW dlhZxU\">\n<h3>Police are investigating a case of criminal damage after a face mask was painted on a huge South Downs landmark the Long Man of Wilmington.<\/h3>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<h2 style=\"padding-left: 40px;\"><em><span style=\"color: #800080;\">\u2026 Long Man of Wilmington\u2026. had the mask painted across its face\u2026<\/span><\/em><\/h2>\n<h2 style=\"padding-left: 40px;\"><em><span style=\"color: #800080;\">\u2026 actions that have been taken are unacceptable\u2026<\/span><\/em><\/h2>\n<p><em>The Standard<\/em> writes:<\/p>\n<p>The \u00a0Long Man of Wilmington, a 235 feet figure originally carved in the chalk of the hill between\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.standard.co.uk\/topic\/eastbourne\">Eastbourne<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.standard.co.uk\/topic\/lewes\">Lewes<\/a>, was discovered to have had the mask painted across its face on Tuesday.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"sc-fzokvW dlhZxU\">\n<p>The prominent figure on the hillside above the village of Wilmington is a protected archaeological site owned by the Sussex Archaeological Society and highly visible from the A27 which passes closely by.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"sc-fzokvW dlhZxU\">\n<p>Sergeant Tom Carter, from the Sussex Police Rural Crime Team, said: \u201cWhilst this damage may have been perpetrated for humour or some other reason, the actions that have been taken are unacceptable.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"sc-fzokvW dlhZxU\">\n<p>&#8220;The Long Man of Wilmington is protected by law as a Scheduled Ancient Monument for its historical significance; on top of this the figure is well known and enjoyed by the local community and this criminal damage is an affront&#8230;.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>&#8230;.Mark Harrison, from Historic England, said: \u201cHistoric England is working closely with Sussex Police Rural Crime Team to identify the offenders who have caused damage to this protected archaeological site.
