{"id":28319,"date":"2020-11-20T15:48:32","date_gmt":"2020-11-20T15:48:32","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/newsblogsnew.ihbc.org.uk\/?p=28319"},"modified":"2020-11-20T15:48:32","modified_gmt":"2020-11-20T15:48:32","slug":"row-over-chinas-plan-to-build-its-largest-european-embassy-in-londons-east-end-as-consultation-begins","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/newsblogs.ihbc.org.uk\/?p=28319","title":{"rendered":"Row over China\u2019s plan to build its largest European embassy in London\u2019s East End as consultation begins"},"content":{"rendered":"<h3><a href=\"https:\/\/newsblogs.ihbc.org.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/11\/evening_standard_201120.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-28320 alignright\" src=\"https:\/\/newsblogs.ihbc.org.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/11\/evening_standard_201120.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"221\" \/><\/a>China\u2019s ambassador to the UK Liu Xiaoming has written to the mayor of Tower Hamlets John Biggs to say he believes councillors are \u2018attempting to disrupt\u2019 the new embassy.<\/h3>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p><em>The Evening Standard<\/em> writes:<\/p>\n<p>A row has erupted out over China\u2019s plans to build its largest European embassy in east\u00a0London\u00a0as the first consultations on the project begin.<\/p>\n<div class=\"sc-clsHhM eSXakm\">\n<p>China sent letters to Wapping residents over the weekend explaining its plans for the embassy, cultural centre, office space and staff accommodation on the former Royal Mint site.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"sc-clsHhM eSXakm\">\n<p>However, China\u2019s ambassador to the UK Liu Xiaoming has written to the mayor of Tower Hamlets\u00a0John Biggs to say he believes councillors are &#8220;attempting to disrupt&#8221; the new embassy.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"sc-clsHhM eSXakm\">\n<p>He expressed his &#8220;grave concern&#8221; over a motion due to be discussed at a full council meeting tonight regarding the Chinese treatment of Uighur Muslims in Xinjiang and new laws in Hong Kong.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>The motion, proposed by Liberal Democrat councillor Rabina Khan and Conservative Peter Golds, asks that the council publicly raise its opposition of Muslim prisoners with the UK and Chinese Governments.<\/p>\n<div class=\"sc-clsHhM eSXakm\">\n<p>In his letter Mr Xiaoming wrote: &#8220;I have noticed that recently, a few Tower Hamlets are attempting to disrupt the new Chinese Embassy project under the excuse of Xinjiang and Hong Kong related issues.&#8221;<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>He adds that the reports of Muslims being detained in camps, forced into labour and banned from practicing their religion in the country are &#8220;all lies fabricated by a few irresponsible politicians and media from the West&#8221;.<\/p>\n<div class=\"sc-clsHhM eSXakm\">\n<p>China bought the Royal Mint for \u00a3250 million in 2018. The site sits towards the end of Cable Street, which has been a symbol of anti-racism after\u00a0East End\u00a0residents halted a march of fascists through Stepney in 1936.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>China&#8217;s crackdown on Hong Kong and its reported persecution of Uighur Muslims has led to opposition to the embassy in Tower Hamlets, which has one of the largest Muslim populations in the UK.<\/p>\n<div class=\"sc-clsHhM eSXakm\">\n<p>Ms Khan said it was important the motion was heard at full council and Mr Xiaoming&#8217;s letter was publicly published.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"sc-clsHhM eSXakm\">\n<p>She added said: &#8220;We must call out the contents of the letters from the Chinese Embassy and set the record straight. East Enders will not stand by and let this issue pass just as those who have lived here before us stood firm in Cable Street.&#8221;<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"sc-clsHhM eSXakm\">\n<p>Mr Biggs said: \u2018\u2019We are an open and tolerant place here in the East End.
