Restoration work being carried out on the 200-year-old Union Chain Bridge has been given another boost.<\/p>\n

The oldest suspension bridge in the world still carrying traffic has been granted \u00a3250,000 by Historic England to boost a \u00a310.5 million refurbishment due to start this month.<\/p>\n

The donation will fund “essential” repairs to the anchoring mechanisms and masonry attached to the rock face at the English end of the Grade I-listed structure. The chains are anchored into the rock face on the English side of the bridge.<\/p>\n

Historic England’s acting regional director Charles Smith said: “The Union Chain Bridge is one of the most majestic and historically important bridges in the north east and Scotland.<\/p>\n

“We are proud to be playing a key role in this cross-border restoration project, which will hopefully help secure the bridge’s future for the next 200 years.”<\/p>\n

The National Lottery Heritage Fundpreviously gave the project \u00a33.1m, while Northumberland County Council and Scottish Borders Council have \u00a0committed \u00a35.7m.<\/p>\n

An engineering breakthrough when built by Royal Navy captain Samuel Brown in 1820, the bridge spans the England-Scotland border on the River Tweed between Horncliffe and Fishwick.<\/p>\n
