{"id":27664,"date":"2020-09-11T18:13:57","date_gmt":"2020-09-11T17:13:57","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/newsblogsnew.ihbc.org.uk\/?p=27664"},"modified":"2020-10-19T16:07:37","modified_gmt":"2020-10-19T15:07:37","slug":"new-uk-conservation-people-and-places-appg-launched-with-ihbc-secretariat-layla-moran-mp-chair-officer-experience-already-spans-foreign-affairs-homes-and-communities-agency-law-and-planning","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/newsblogs.ihbc.org.uk\/?p=27664","title":{"rendered":"New UK Conservation, Places and People APPG launched with IHBC secretariat: Layla Moran MP Chair; officer experience already spans foreign affairs, Homes and Communities Agency, law and planning &#8211; #PlacesPeopleAPPG"},"content":{"rendered":"<h3><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-full wp-image-22545\" src=\"https:\/\/newsblogs.ihbc.org.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/05\/appg_logo.png\" alt=\"logo\" width=\"185\" height=\"199\" \/>A new <a href=\"https:\/\/www.parliament.uk\/about\/mps-and-lords\/members\/apg\/\">All-Party Parliamentary Group<\/a> (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.parliament.uk\/about\/mps-and-lords\/members\/apg\/\">APPG<\/a>) on \u2018Conservation Places and People\u2019 was inaugurated on 10 September with the IHBC as its secretariat, chaired by <a href=\"https:\/\/members.parliament.uk\/member\/4656\/contact\">Layla Moran MP<\/a>, foreign affairs spokesperson for the Liberal Democrats, and with vice-chairs that span both Houses of Parliament and major political parties.<\/h3>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p>APPG vice-chairs include the former chief executive of the Homes and Communities Agency (Lord Kerslake, Crossbench); the Conservative MP who won Tony Blair\u2019s former constituency in Sedgefield (Paul Howell); barrister and listed building owner (Earl of Devon, Crossbench) and Helen Hayes, formerly a planner specialising in town centre regeneration before becoming MP for Dulwich.<\/p>\n<p>The APPG\u2019s ambition is:<\/p>\n<h2><em><span style=\"color: #800080;\">To support built and historic environment conservation as the means to deliver successful places, which are economically, environmentally and socially sustainable. This includes using heritage to help places adapt to the diverse needs of current and future communities, whilst supporting enterprise, transport connectivity, health, climate change efforts and quality of life.<\/span><\/em><\/h2>\n<p>Layla Moran said: \u2018I am very pleased to have been invited to chair this APPG which will champion the conservation of the historic environment as a means to deliver successful places that are economically, environmentally and socially sustainable.\u2019<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p>IHBC Chair David McDonald: \u2018The APPG\u2019s focus on \u2018conservation, places and people\u2019 represents the three pillars that can ensure a sustainable future following the pandemic.\u00a0 The APPG\u2019s core aim is to help communities manage and benefit from local places and heritage, as powerful drivers for physical, social and economic sustainability, regeneration and progress.\u2019<\/p>\n<h2><em><span style=\"color: #800080;\">\u2026IHBC would like to thank our advisers across the whole process, <a style=\"color: #800080;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.powerscourt-group.com\/\">Powerscourt<\/a>\u2026<\/span><\/em><\/h2>\n<p>\u2018Establishing the APPG is the first stage of much larger ambitions, but for now we are delighted to have such broad-ranging interest from MPs across the parties, including SNP, Green and crossbench members.\u00a0 We are very conscious too that we do not yet have UK-wide representation, and that is a clear priority for the IHBC both as secretariat and as a UK professional body and charity.\u2019<\/p>\n<h2><em><span style=\"color: #800080;\">\u2026[to] champion the conservation of the historic environment as a means to deliver successful places\u2026<\/span><\/em><\/h2>\n<p>\u2018Our other priority now is to get a programme of events and inquiries in place, and to show how conservation offers real solutions to our challenges.\u00a0 As a lead up to this inauguration we\u2019ve been very lucky to have Layla introduce the IHBC\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ihbc.org.uk\/Yearbook\/2020Yearbook\/index.html\">2020 Yearbook<\/a>\u00a0 as well as recording a powerful opening speech to the IHBC\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/virtualschool20.ihbc.org.uk\/\">2020 Virtual School<\/a>.<\/p>\n<h2><em><span style=\"color: #800080;\">\u2026.to deliver successful places that are economically, environmentally and socially sustainable\u2026.<\/span><\/em><\/h2>\n<p>\u2018Also, Layla will draft the introduction to the next issue of the IHBC\u2019s membership journal, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ihbc.org.uk\/page55\/context\/index.html\">Context<\/a>, which explores Oxford as a global city and the challenges it faces as it balances economics, unsustainable infrastructure and development pressures across local communities.\u2019<\/p>\n<h2><em><span style=\"color: #800080;\">\u2026to help communities manage and benefit from local places and heritage, as powerful drivers\u2026<\/span><\/em><\/h2>\n<p>IHBC Director Se\u00e1n O\u2019Reilly said: \u2018In the coming months and years, APPG members want to address the major issues we face now, as well as the longer term challenges confronting society.\u00a0 The focus will remain on how conservation is part of the solution, helping us manage valued places as a sustainable resource, and benefit from them for the
