{"id":27353,"date":"2020-08-14T17:40:52","date_gmt":"2020-08-14T16:40:52","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/newsblogsnew.ihbc.org.uk\/?p=27353"},"modified":"2020-08-14T17:40:52","modified_gmt":"2020-08-14T16:40:52","slug":"ihbc-features-heritage-from-the-doorstep-guildford-casino-nightclub-development-unanimously-rejected-labelled-monstrous-carbuncle","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/newsblogs.ihbc.org.uk\/?p=27353","title":{"rendered":"IHBC features \u2018Heritage from the doorstep\u2019: Guildford Casino nightclub development unanimously rejected, labelled &#8216;monstrous carbuncle&#8217;"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"content-column\">\n<div class=\"article-body\">\n<h3><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-full wp-image-27354\" src=\"https:\/\/newsblogs.ihbc.org.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/08\/surrey_live_140820.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"267\" \/>The proposal for the large quadrant development at the Guildford Casino nightclub site &#8211; included 267 student bedrooms and a rooftop terrace \u2013 has been unanimously rejected by Guildford Borough Council (GBC), reports <em>Surrey Live.<!--more--><\/em><\/h3>\n<p><em>Surrey Live<\/em> writes:<\/p>\n<p>A proposal submitted to the council in November\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.getsurrey.co.uk\/news\/surrey-news\/casino-nightclub-redevelopment-plans-unveiled-17283264\" data-link-tracking=\"InArticle|Link\" data-content-type=\"news\">included 267 bedrooms for students from the Academy of Contemporary Music,<\/a>\u00a0as well as a large rooftop terrace and restaurant overlooking the River Wey and\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.getsurrey.co.uk\/all-about\/guildford-cathedral\" data-link-tracking=\"InArticle|Link\" data-content-type=\"section-topic\">Guildford Cathedral<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>However, all 15 councillors on GBC&#8217;s Planning Committee voted against the quadrant development at a meeting on Wednesday (July 29).<\/p>\n<p>One member, Councillor Marsha Moseley, Conservative member for Ash Vale, described the development as \u201ca monstrous carbuncle&#8221; and said that while the Bedford area is in need of regeneration, this should not be &#8220;at any cost&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>Council officers had already recommended planning permission be refused, citing concerns over flooding risks and the harm the building would cause to the heritage assets it surrounds.<\/p>\n<p>Members heard from two members of the public involved in the design process, each of whom gave submissions as to why the application should be accepted.<\/p>\n<p>Dr Ashley Bowes pointed to how the proposed Guildford train station redevelopment would sit taller than the highest point of the Casino redevelopment, which is also &#8220;in a far more prominent location&#8221;&#8230;..<\/p>\n<p>He said: &#8220;I would like to welcome everyone to the London Borough of Guildford. This is a prime example of how to be totally unsympathetic to the setting.
