It collects information about people\u2019s housing circumstances and the condition and energy efficiency of housing in England.<\/p>\n<p>It has 2\u00a0component surveys:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>a household interview<\/li>\n<li>a physical inspection of a sub sample of the properties<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3 id=\"survey-users\"><strong>Survey users<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>A\u00a0<a class=\"govuk-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.uk\/guidance\/english-housing-survey-guidance-and-methodology\">detailed guide for survey users<\/a>\u00a0provides information about:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>the background to the survey and how the data are used<\/li>\n<li>the questionnaire and physical survey form<\/li>\n<li>technical survey methodology<\/li>\n<li>data quality<\/li>\n<li>how we engage with our wider user community<\/li>\n<li>the\u00a0revisions policy<\/li>\n<li>the\u00a0dissemination strategy<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3 id=\"households-selected-for-thesurvey\"><strong>Households selected for the\u00a0survey<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>Each year a sample of addresses is drawn at random from a list of private addresses held by the Royal Mail. Householders at those addresses are invited to take part in the survey and will receive an initial letter from our contractor NatCen Social Research.<\/p>\n<p><a class=\"govuk-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.uk\/guidance\/english-housing-survey-information-for-households\">Background information<\/a> about the survey is available for households selected to take part in the survey.<\/p>\n<h3 id=\"years-of-the-english-housing-survey\"><strong>50 years of the English Housing Survey<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>2017 was the 50th anniversary of the first national housing survey and to mark the anniversary a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.uk\/government\/publications\/50-years-of-the-english-housing-survey\">comparison of the 1967 housing survey with the English Housing Survey in 2017<\/a> was published that year.<\/p>\n<p><strong>2018 &#8211;
