New, tighter standards for construction machinery are to be\u00a0introduced on 1 September 2020.\u00a0However, the\u00a0Covid-19 pandemic<\/a>\u00a0has had an impact on supply chains, making it more difficult for construction firms to prepare their machinery for the new Low Emission Zone standards.<\/p>\n

Challenges include delays to the retrofitting of existing machinery and interruptions to the supply of new equipment.<\/p>\n

In response,\u00a0the Mayor of London is introducing a new six-month exemption period from the new\u00a0Low Emission Zone standards<\/a>\u00a0to support companies as they work to comply with the standards. This will run from September 2020 until the end of February 2021.<\/p>\n

Existing standards, in place since 2015, will continue to apply.<\/p>\n

Tackling emissions from London\u2019s construction sites is a key part of the mayor\u2019s plans to tackle\u00a0London\u2019s toxic air<\/a>. Machinery such as diggers and bulldozers are currently responsible for 15%\u00a0of local PM2.5\u00a0<\/sub>emissions in London and\u00a0the fifth largest source of nitrogen oxides (NOx).<\/p>\n

The\u00a0Non-Road Mobile Machinery\u00a0<\/strong>Low Emission Zone uses the Mayor\u2019s planning powers to reduce emissions from construction machinery.\u00a0The tightening of the standards is part of a number of steps towards a longer-term zero emission target\u00a0for construction machinery.<\/p>\n

Drive down emissions<\/h2>\n

Deputy mayor for environment and energy, Shirley Rodrigues said:\u00a0\u201cAs London recovers from the coronavirus pandemic and building restarts at full capacity, we\u2019re working closely with the construction industry to drive down emissions.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe NRMM Low Emission Zone is the first of its kind in the world and will ensure that we reduce emissions from machinery on construction sites.<\/p>\n

\u201cHowever Covid-19 has created inevitable disruptions to suppliers of new construction machinery and retrofit services. That\u2019s why the Mayor has granted a six-month exemption period to give site operators more time to prepare machinery for the new standards and support London\u2019s\u00a0green recovery<\/a>.\u201d<\/p>\n
