This will run from September 2020 until the end of February 2021.<\/p>\n<p>Existing standards, in place since 2015, will continue to apply.<\/p>\n<p>Tackling emissions from London\u2019s construction sites is a key part of the mayor\u2019s plans to tackle\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.pbctoday.co.uk\/news\/energy-news\/cleaner-construction-practices-are-vital-to-tackle-toxic-air\/38364\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">London\u2019s toxic air<\/a>. Machinery such as diggers and bulldozers are currently responsible for 15%\u00a0of local PM<sub>2.5\u00a0<\/sub>emissions in London and\u00a0the fifth largest source of nitrogen oxides (NOx).<\/p>\n<p>The\u00a0Non-Road Mobile Machinery<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>Low Emission Zone uses the Mayor\u2019s planning powers to reduce emissions from construction machinery.\u00a0The tightening of the standards is part of a number of steps towards a longer-term zero emission target\u00a0for construction machinery.<\/p>\n<h2>Drive down emissions<\/h2>\n<p>Deputy mayor for environment and energy, Shirley Rodrigues said:\u00a0\u201cAs London recovers from the coronavirus pandemic and building restarts at full capacity, we\u2019re working closely with the construction industry to drive down emissions.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe NRMM Low Emission Zone is the first of its kind in the world and will ensure that we reduce emissions from machinery on construction sites.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHowever Covid-19 has created inevitable disruptions to suppliers of new construction machinery and retrofit services.
