{"id":26497,"date":"2020-06-02T16:30:48","date_gmt":"2020-06-02T15:30:48","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/newsblogsnew.ihbc.org.uk\/?p=26497"},"modified":"2020-06-02T16:30:48","modified_gmt":"2020-06-02T15:30:48","slug":"ihbcs-covid-19-signpost-79-garden-trust-on-research-and-conservation-of-historic-landscapes-during-lockdown","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/newsblogs.ihbc.org.uk\/?p=26497","title":{"rendered":"IHBC\u2019s COVID-19 signpost 79: Garden Trust on research and conservation of historic landscapes during lockdown"},"content":{"rendered":"<h3><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-full wp-image-22319\" src=\"https:\/\/newsblogs.ihbc.org.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/04\/formal_garden__UK_Gov_Open_Licence_v3_0.png\" alt=\"formal garden\" width=\"282\" height=\"141\" \/>The Garden Trust has highlighted how, even during the lockdown, people can still do a lot of research to help protect our historic landscapes.<\/h3>\n<h6><em>image: for illustratation purposes only Open Government Licence v3.0<\/em><\/h6>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p>The Garden Trust writes:<\/p>\n<p>For those of you already researching historic parks and gardens, or who are keen to get started, there is a huge amount of material online and lots you can do from home.<\/p>\n<h3>ONLINE RESEARCH<\/h3>\n<p>Here are a few of the many free resources available online that you can use to carry on historic and site surveys from home:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Historic maps at\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.archiuk.com\/archi\/archi_maps.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">ArchiMaps<\/a>\u00a0and the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/maps.nls.uk\/os\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">National Library of Scotland<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.google.co.uk\/intl\/en_uk\/earth\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Google Earth<\/a>\u00a0or\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.bing.com\/maps\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Bing mapping<\/a>, or even\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/digimap.edina.ac.uk\/lidar\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">LiDAR<\/a>\u00a0for larger landscape features<\/li>\n<li>The Archaeology Data Service\u2019s library of unpublished site reports, or \u2018grey literature\u2019 at<br \/>\n<a href=\"https:\/\/archaeologydataservice.ac.uk\/archives\/view\/greylit\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">https:\/\/archaeologydataservice.ac.uk\/archives\/view\/greylit\/<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>And, of course, many local libraries, archives or museums have made at least some of their collections available digitally.<\/p>\n<h3>WRITE UP AND SHARE RESEARCH<\/h3>\n<p>If you have already done site visits and know your landscapes and their present condition really well, now is the time to get down to writing up the history and description of the landscape.<\/p>\n<p>You can contribute your research to online databases such as\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.parksandgardens.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Parks and Gardens UK<\/a>\u00a0and the Historic England Register of Historic Parks and Gardens Register, via their\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/historicengland.org.uk\/listing\/enrich-the-list\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Enriching the List<\/a>\u00a0initiative.<\/p>\n<p>It would also be an ideal time to brush up your understanding of a site\u2019s significance and submit the information to your county\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/historicengland.org.uk\/advice\/technical-advice\/information-management\/hers\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Historic Environment Record<\/a>. These records are very important in helping to protect historic parks and gardens in the planning process.<\/p>\n<h2>Help us conserve historic parks and gardens<\/h2>\n<p>Please do look at our weekly list of planning applications affecting Registered parks and gardens to see if you can contribute your local knowledge to our responses. The weekly list is available from your CGT\u2019s planning team, or on the Garden Trust\u2019s Twitter and Facebook accounts. We don\u2019t want anything to slip through the net during this period.<\/p>\n<h3>STAY IN TOUCH<\/h3>\n<p>The HLP will need to postpone its training and networking events for the next few months at least, but we are working on other ways of staying in touch with CGT volunteers.\u00a0If you haven\u2019t yet tried out video calls and group chats to stay in touch with fellow volunteers, we are preparing some straightforward instructions about signing up and using the main online platforms, such as Skype, Facebook, WhatsApp and Zoom.<\/p>\n<p>Please contact\u00a0<a href=\"mailto:tamsinmcmillan@thegardenstrust.org\">Tamsin McMillan<\/a>\u00a0if you have ideas to share about what\u00a0volunteers can do to help support local parks and gardens during this period, or would like to join the Historic Landscapes Project mailing list.
