{"id":26118,"date":"2020-04-28T16:11:27","date_gmt":"2020-04-28T15:11:27","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/ihbconline.co.uk\/newsachive\/?p=26118"},"modified":"2020-04-28T16:11:27","modified_gmt":"2020-04-28T15:11:27","slug":"ihbcs-covid-19-signpost-33-avoid-using-microwave-to-get-faster-internet-from-ofcom-via-the-bbc","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/newsblogs.ihbc.org.uk\/?p=26118","title":{"rendered":"IHBC\u2019s COVID-19 signpost 33: &#8216;Avoid using microwave to get faster internet&#8217;, from Ofcom, via the BBC"},"content":{"rendered":"<h3><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-full wp-image-25870\" src=\"https:\/\/newsblogs.ihbc.org.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/04\/screen.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"300\" \/>People should avoid using the microwave at the same time as their wi-fi, media regulator Ofcom has said, as part of advice to help improve internet speeds.<\/h3>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p>The BBC writes:<\/p>\n<p>It comes as millions work remotely and rely on streaming services after the UK was told to \u2018stay at home\u2019.<\/p>\n<p>This has put pressure on broadband providers, with BT&#8217;s Openreach reporting a 20% surge in internet use.<\/p>\n<p>The government said reliable internet speeds were \u2018crucial\u2019 as the UK battles the coronavirus.<\/p>\n<p>Ofcom&#8217;s advice ranges from the seemingly obvious, like downloading films in advance rather than streaming them when someone else may be trying to make a video call, to the less expected.<\/p>\n<p>\u2018Did you know that microwave ovens can also reduce wi-fi signals?\u2019 Ofcom asks.<\/p>\n<p>\u2018So don&#8217;t use the microwave when you&#8217;re making video calls, watching HD videos or doing something important online.\u2019<\/p>\n<p>Other tips include:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Position your internet router as far as possible from other devices that may interfere with the signal, such as on a table or shelf rather than the floor<\/li>\n<li>Keep your router switched on<\/li>\n<li>If you&#8217;re carrying out video calls or meetings, turning the video off and using audio will require much less of your internet connection<\/li>\n<li>Try starting those calls at less common times, rather than on the hour or half hour<\/li>\n<li>For the best broadband speeds, use an ethernet cable to connect your computer directly to your router rather than using wi-fi<\/li>\n<li>Where possible, try not to use a telephone extension lead, as these can cause interference which could lower your speed.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Devices that can interfere with router signals include: cordless phones, baby monitors, halogen lamps, dimmer switches, stereos and computer speakers, TVs and monitors.<\/p>\n<p>Ofcom also advised making calls on a landline where possible, citing an increase in the demand on mobile networks.<\/p>\n<p>\u2018If you do need to use your mobile, try using your settings to turn on wi-fi calling,\u2019 Ofcom said.<\/p>\n<p>\u2018Similarly, you can make voice calls over the internet using apps like Facetime, Skype or WhatsApp.\u2019<\/p>\n<p>The regulator also suggested disconnecting devices that were not in use.<\/p>\n<p>\u2018The more devices attached to your wi-fi, the lower the speed you get,\u2019 it said.<\/p>\n<p>\u2018Devices like tablets and smartphones often work in the background, so try switching wi-fi reception off on these when you&#8217;re not using them.\u2019<\/p>\n<p>Ofcom is not the only organisation taking action to maximise internet speeds during the lockdown.<\/p>\n<p>Streaming platforms including Facebook, Netflix, Disney+ and YouTube have already <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/news\/technology-52003035\">reduced the quality of videos<\/a> in an attempt to ease the strain on internet service providers.<\/p>\n<p>But the internet companies say they can handle the pressure.<\/p>\n<p>Openreach, which maintains the telephone cables and cabinets across the country used by most broadband providers, said that &#8211;
