{"id":26071,"date":"2020-04-24T17:43:46","date_gmt":"2020-04-24T16:43:46","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/ihbconline.co.uk\/newsachive\/?p=26071"},"modified":"2020-04-24T17:43:46","modified_gmt":"2020-04-24T16:43:46","slug":"ihbcs-heritage-from-the-doorstep-netflix-set-to-move-into-tv-studios-on-ashford-railway-works-site","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/newsblogs.ihbc.org.uk\/?p=26071","title":{"rendered":"IHBC\u2019s \u2018Heritage from the doorstep\u2019: Netflix set to move into TV studios on Ashford railway works site"},"content":{"rendered":"<h3><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-full wp-image-26072\" src=\"https:\/\/newsblogs.ihbc.org.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/04\/kent_online_2404020.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"297\" \/>Video streaming giant Netflix is set to make new film and TV studios in Ashford its UK base, <em>KentOnline<\/em> understands.<\/h3>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p><em>KentOnline<\/em> writes:<\/p>\n<p>Films could be made in\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.kentonline.co.uk\/ashford\/\">Ashford<\/a>\u00a0by the end of 2021 &#8211; with a planning application for the Newtown railway works scheme set to be submitted this week.<\/p>\n<p>A detailed plan for the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.kentonline.co.uk\/ashford\/news\/film-studios-plan-under-scrutiny-211416\/\">Quinn Estates project<\/a>\u00a0was unveiled when the prolific development company held a public consultation at the Ashford Rail Club last Wednesday.<\/p>\n<p>Two or three universities are expected to move onto the site, training students in film making techniques while giving them on-set experience.<\/p>\n<p>Entertainment giants including\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.kentonline.co.uk\/ashford\/news\/exclusive-netflix-set-to-move-to-kent-200642\/\">Netflix<\/a>, Amazon and HBO could fill the studios, which will sit alongside 300 apartments, a hotel and workshops.<\/p>\n<p>Alongside the four 1,860 sq m studios, about 300 new homes will also be introduced into the train sheds &#8211; buildings which have lain largely unused since 1972.<\/p>\n<p>The public consultation, held at The Railway Club in Beaver Road, was attended by a number of interested residents.<\/p>\n<p>Beaver Lane resident Keith Wells, who once had a job at the works, said: \u201cI\u2019m very pleased they\u2019re using a brownfield site and not covering more green land in concrete.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI really hope they make the houses actually affordable, or at least set affordable rent prices, so that people on minimum wage can move in.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>One of the main sticking points among residents is access onto the site, with many saying Newtown Road won\u2019t be able to cope with increased congestion or use by big vehicles.<\/p>\n<p>Howard Green, who lives close to the town centre, said: \u201cThe only thing I\u2019d be interested in finding out more about is getting in and out of the place.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhy don\u2019t they improve on the access road to the site and put in a roundabout around the clocktower?<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou\u2019ve got that humpback bridge on one end and the railway bridge on the other, so you definitely have constraints.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe rest of it they can do what they like with.
