{"id":25619,"date":"2020-03-10T16:02:31","date_gmt":"2020-03-10T16:02:31","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/ihbconline.co.uk\/newsachive\/?p=25619"},"modified":"2020-03-09T15:51:17","modified_gmt":"2020-03-09T15:51:17","slug":"riba-building-regulations-proposals-fail-to-meet-scale-of-climate-challenge","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/newsblogs.ihbc.org.uk\/?p=25619","title":{"rendered":"RIBA: Building regulations proposals fail to meet scale of climate challenge"},"content":{"rendered":"<h3><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-25414\" src=\"https:\/\/newsblogs.ihbc.org.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/02\/construction_gov_open_licence_v3-300x200.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" \/>The Royal Institute of British Architects (RIBA) has responded to the Future Homes Standard consultation on proposed changes to the Building Regulations for new homes, and arguing that the proposed changes do not go far enough and offering recommendation that include embedding \u2018embodied carbon targets into building regulations\u2019.<\/h3>\n<h6><em>image: Open Government Licence v3.0<\/em><\/h6>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p>The RIBA writes:<\/p>\n<p>The RIBA\u00a0argues that the proposed changes do not go\u00a0far enough,\u00a0and\u00a0urges the Government to:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Use<strong>\u00a0\u2018operational energy\u2019\u00a0<\/strong>(energy used at the\u00a0meter)as the principal\u00a0metric for determining the energy efficiency of buildings.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li>Embed\u00a0<strong>embodied carbon<\/strong>\u00a0targets into building regulations.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li>Close loopholes which allow homes to be built using \u2018out-of-date\u2019 regulations.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>RIBA President, Professor\u00a0<strong>Alan M Jones<\/strong>, said:<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe\u00a0proposed\u00a0changes to building regulations\u00a0are simply not ambitious enough to meet the scale of our\u00a0environmental\u00a0challenge. If we are to stand a chance of meeting net zero by 2050, the Government must urgently\u00a0embed\u00a0much clearer and more demanding targets on operational energy and embodied carbon into building regulations.<\/p>\n<p>They must also crack down on loopholes which are exploited by developers to build new homes according to regulations from the time they first broke ground \u2013 often years out of date.<\/p>\n<p>Architects have a key role in tackling the worst housing crisis for generations and a global environmental\u00a0emergency but\u00a0need much more ambitious leadership from Government to drive the necessary changes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Alongside lobbying the Government to make fundamental changes to building regulations, the RIBA is\u00a0supporting its members to\u00a0drive\u00a0change.
