{"id":25604,"date":"2020-03-06T17:14:50","date_gmt":"2020-03-06T17:14:50","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/ihbconline.co.uk\/newsachive\/?p=25604"},"modified":"2020-03-06T17:14:50","modified_gmt":"2020-03-06T17:14:50","slug":"ihbcs-heritage-from-the-doorstep-sheffields-full-monty-working-mens-club-has-been-saved-from-demolition-for-now","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/newsblogs.ihbc.org.uk\/?p=25604","title":{"rendered":"IHBC\u2019s \u2018Heritage from the doorstep\u2019: Sheffield&#8217;s Full Monty working men&#8217;s club has been saved from demolition &#8211; for now"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"sc-kEmuub sc-bbkauy dWKjda\">\n<h3><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-25605\" src=\"https:\/\/newsblogs.ihbc.org.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/03\/YorkshirePost060320-300x261.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"261\" \/>A working men&#8217;s club which appeared in The Full Monty has been given a temporary reprieve from the bulldozers as Sheffield City Council has refused permission for Shiregreen Club to be demolished after a petition to save the venue attracted 900 signatures, while warning that a long-term viability plan is needed to guarantee its future.<\/h3>\n<p><!--more--><em>The Yorkshire Post<\/em> writes:<\/p>\n<p>It closed in 2018 and the site has been the subject of interest from housing developers.<\/p>\n<p>Yet a local councillor has warned that it cannot remain out of use indefinitely and called for volunteers to take it on.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"sc-kEmuub sc-bbkauy dWKjda\">\n<div class=\"sc-kEmuub sc-bbkauy dWKjda\">\n<p>\u201cThis is a stay of execution but I\u2019m just pleased it gives the community time to find a solution,&#8221; said Cllr Peter Price, who has held ward surgeries at the club since 1972.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"sc-kEmuub sc-bbkauy dWKjda\">\n<p>\u201cThere are no real grounds for this refusal in the long term so I would love for some members of the community to help take it on.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"sc-kEmuub sc-bbkauy dWKjda\">\n<p>\u201cIdeally I would like to see the concert room at the back run by volunteers. I don\u2019t want to see it demolished and replaced with apartments because there are no alternative venues in the area where the community can get together. It\u2019s very important to have a venue where people can come together for a drink.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"sc-kEmuub sc-bbkauy dWKjda\">\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m hoping to speak to the tenants and residents group on the Flower estate to see if it can get involved.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"sc-kEmuub sc-bbkauy dWKjda\">\n<p>\u201cThe problem is we are a deprived area and a lot of things are already being run by volunteers so they don\u2019t have time to take on anything else.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"sc-kEmuub sc-bbkauy dWKjda\">\n<p>Planning officer Howard Baxter said the demolition was refused because it was a sensitive site surrounded by houses.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"sc-kEmuub sc-bbkauy dWKjda\">\n<p>He added: \u201cThe storage of demolition material on the site is likely to have a harmful amenity impact.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"sc-kEmuub sc-bbkauy dWKjda\">\n<p>\u201cFurther information was requested in January as to the details of the material to be stockpiled on site and the means of securing the site. This has not been provided&#8230;.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"sc-kEmuub sc-bbkauy dWKjda\">\n<p>Shiregeen became an unlikely tourist attraction after the 1997 movie about out-of-work Sheffield steelworkers turning to striptease grossed \u00a3250million. The function room was packed with hundreds of female extras when the &#8216;big reveal&#8217; scene was shot there.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"sc-kEmuub sc-bbkauy dWKjda\">\n<p>It was renamed Shiregreen Club and often hosted charity strip acts in the wake of the film&#8230;.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"sc-kEmuub sc-bbkauy dWKjda\">\n<p>It originally opened in 1919 and moved to the current site in 1928.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"sc-kEmuub sc-bbkauy dWKjda\">\n<p>Before its closure, its lease was ended and it operated as a pub rather than a working men&#8217;s club, despite committee members claiming it was still thriving with 450 members.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"sc-kEmuub sc-bbkauy dWKjda\">\n<p>In the 1990s, financial problems meant the freehold of the building had to be transferred to a brewery to cover debts. It was sold to US beer giant Coors in 2004.
