The Royal Institute of British Architects (RIBA) is calling for Alistair Darling to support a reduction in VAT on the refurbishment of homes and energy efficient goods. Alistair Darling is attending a meeting of EU Finance Ministers tomorrow at which they will discuss proposals to reduce VAT on a range of services including the renovation and repair of housing.<\/p>\n
The RIBA has been campaigning for VAT rates on new build and refurbishment to be harmonised at a level of 5%, and is a member of the Cut the VAT coalition. Gordon Brown supported the cut in VAT at the European Council meeting in December and the RIBA is now calling for Alistair Darling to do so at the Ecofin Council meeting tomorrow. \nSpeaking about the call to Alastair Darling, Sunand Prasad said, “The RIBA, as part of the Cut the VAT Coalition, believes that reducing VAT from 17.5% to 5% for all maintenance and home improvement work would help the Government achieve its target of cutting carbon emissions by 60% by 2050. It would also benefit millions of UK homeowners by getting rid of cowboy builders, helping those who cannot afford vital repairs to their homes, bringing our empty properties back into use, protecting the countryside and helping to reduce fuel poverty.”
