{"id":25146,"date":"2020-01-24T16:52:40","date_gmt":"2020-01-24T16:52:40","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/ihbconline.co.uk\/newsachive\/?p=25146"},"modified":"2020-01-24T16:52:40","modified_gmt":"2020-01-24T16:52:40","slug":"only-one-in-10-support-new-towns-study-finds","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/newsblogs.ihbc.org.uk\/?p=25146","title":{"rendered":"Only one in 10 support \u2018new towns\u2019, study finds"},"content":{"rendered":"<h3><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-15390\" src=\"https:\/\/newsblogs.ihbc.org.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/04\/s300_planning-aerial-960x640_UK_Gov_open_licence_140417-300x195.jpg\" alt=\"Aerial view under UK gov open licence agreement 140417\" width=\"300\" height=\"195\" \/>Just 10% of the UK population believes that the construction of new towns is the best way to tackle the UK housing crisis, according to a new report.<\/h3>\n<h6><em>image: Open Goverment Licence v3.0<\/em><\/h6>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p>LocalGov writes:<\/p>\n<p>Published by Eurocell Plc\u2026 the report highlights a lack of support for more new towns like Milton Keynes and Telford.<\/p>\n<p>By contrast, 43% of those surveyed would prefer the conversion of old, unused buildings and the regeneration of run-down communities or brownfield sites.<\/p>\n<p>Eurocell\u2019s research is based on a poll of 1,000 who were equally split between homeowners, private renters and social housing occupants.<\/p>\n<p>Only 4% said they would favour the construction of a greater number of high-rise buildings \u2013 a solution that is currently being implemented in high-density population areas such as Manchester and London.<\/p>\n<p>Respondents also highlighted a number of challenges when it came to conversion and regeneration.<\/p>\n<p>These included cost (37%), planning authorities lacking the power to reclaim old buildings (31%), listed building status preventing regeneration (27%) and planning authorities placing too much emphasis on new builds (23%).<\/p>\n<p>\u2018We need to build in excess of 300,000 new homes per year for the next decade to clear the current shortfall. It is therefore vital that a wide variety of options is considered,\u2019 said Chris Coxon, head of marketing at Eurocell.<\/p>\n<p>\u2018This research clearly suggests that there is a preference amongst the UK public for regeneration and the use of brownfield sites, but demand for these spaces is almost certain to outstrip supply.<\/p>\n<p>&#8216;It is far more likely that a balanced mix of all approaches will be required.
