The usefulness of\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.designingbuildings.co.uk\/wiki\/Materials\">materials<\/a>\u00a0for storing\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.designingbuildings.co.uk\/wiki\/Heat\">heat<\/a>\u00a0is based on the relationship between their thermal\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.designingbuildings.co.uk\/wiki\/Property\">properties<\/a>\u00a0and the thermal cycle that they are required to moderate.\u00a0 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.designingbuildings.co.uk\/wiki\/Thermal_mass\">Thermal mass<\/a>\u00a0requires high\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.designingbuildings.co.uk\/wiki\/Specific_heat_capacity\">specific heat capacity<\/a>, high density and a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.designingbuildings.co.uk\/wiki\/Thermal_conductivity\">thermal conductivity<\/a>\u00a0that means\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.designingbuildings.co.uk\/wiki\/Heat\">heat<\/a>\u00a0flows into and out of the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.designingbuildings.co.uk\/wiki\/Materials\">material<\/a>\u00a0are aligned with the thermal cycle of the occupied\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.designingbuildings.co.uk\/wiki\/Space\">space<\/a>.\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.designingbuildings.co.uk\/wiki\/Materials\">Materials<\/a>\u00a0such as\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.designingbuildings.co.uk\/wiki\/Concrete\">concrete<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.designingbuildings.co.uk\/wiki\/Masonry\">masonry<\/a> tend to have a useful <a href=\"https:\/\/www.designingbuildings.co.uk\/wiki\/Thermal_mass\">thermal mass<\/a>, whereas <a href=\"https:\/\/www.designingbuildings.co.uk\/wiki\/Timber\">timber<\/a> is too slow an absorber of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.designingbuildings.co.uk\/wiki\/Heat\">heat<\/a>, and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.designingbuildings.co.uk\/wiki\/Steel\">steel<\/a> has a too high a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.designingbuildings.co.uk\/wiki\/Thermal_conductivity\">thermal conductivity<\/a>\u2026.<\/p>\n<p>However,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.designingbuildings.co.uk\/wiki\/Thermal_mass\">thermal mass<\/a>\u00a0must be exposed to\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.designingbuildings.co.uk\/wiki\/Function\">function<\/a>\u00a0efficiently. This means that it is commonly associated with exposed\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.designingbuildings.co.uk\/wiki\/Concrete_floor\">concrete floors<\/a>, and\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.designingbuildings.co.uk\/wiki\/Walls\">walls<\/a>, rather than conventional\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.designingbuildings.co.uk\/wiki\/Space\">spaces<\/a>\u00a0which might include\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.designingbuildings.co.uk\/wiki\/Walls\">wall<\/a>\u00a0linings,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.designingbuildings.co.uk\/wiki\/Suspended_ceiling\">suspended ceilings<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.designingbuildings.co.uk\/wiki\/Raised_floor\">raised floors<\/a>. This requires that a high-<a href=\"https:\/\/www.designingbuildings.co.uk\/wiki\/Quality\">quality<\/a>\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.designingbuildings.co.uk\/wiki\/Finishes\">finish<\/a>\u00a0is achieved and that\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.designingbuildings.co.uk\/wiki\/Services\">services<\/a>\u00a0are carefully routed.
