But\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.designingbuildings.co.uk\/wiki\/Building\">building<\/a>\u00a0and maintaining long-life <a href=\"https:\/\/www.designingbuildings.co.uk\/wiki\/Infrastructure\">infrastructure<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.designingbuildings.co.uk\/wiki\/Asset\">assets<\/a> in the face of a changing climate is a relatively new challenge.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.designingbuildings.co.uk\/wiki\/Design\">Design<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.designingbuildings.co.uk\/wiki\/Maintenance\">maintenance<\/a>\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.designingbuildings.co.uk\/wiki\/Standards\">standards<\/a>\u00a0for weather\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.designingbuildings.co.uk\/wiki\/Resilience\">resilience<\/a>, where they exist, often refer to the past when it comes to weather and climate. Even the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.designingbuildings.co.uk\/wiki\/Structural\">structural<\/a>\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/eurocodes.jrc.ec.europa.eu\/showpage.php?id=13\">Eurocodes<\/a>\u00a0do not account for future weather and climate impacts.<\/p>\n<p>However, with increasingly visible weather impacts \u2013 not least the recent\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.designingbuildings.co.uk\/wiki\/Damages\">damage<\/a>\u00a0to\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/news\/uk-england-derbyshire-49199505\">Whaley Bridge Dam<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/news\/uk-26042990\">Dawlish Sea Wall<\/a>\u00a0in the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.designingbuildings.co.uk\/wiki\/UK\">UK<\/a>\u00a0? a growing number of\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.designingbuildings.co.uk\/wiki\/Engineering\">engineering<\/a> organisations are now actively\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.designingbuildings.co.uk\/wiki\/Planning\">planning<\/a>\u00a0for the impacts of\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.designingbuildings.co.uk\/wiki\/Climate_change\">climate change<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>In July 2019, BSI published a new\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.designingbuildings.co.uk\/wiki\/British_standards\">British Standard<\/a>\u00a0to provide a good-<a href=\"https:\/\/www.designingbuildings.co.uk\/wiki\/Practice\">practice<\/a>\u00a0approach to\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.designingbuildings.co.uk\/wiki\/Climate_change\">climate change<\/a>\u00a0adaptation.<\/p>\n<p>New global\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.designingbuildings.co.uk\/wiki\/Standards\">standard<\/a><\/p>\n<p>BS EN ISO 14090 describes principles, requirements and guidelines for adaptation to\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.designingbuildings.co.uk\/wiki\/Climate_change\">climate change<\/a>\u00a0for organisations and their\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.designingbuildings.co.uk\/wiki\/Project\">projects<\/a>. These include managing climate\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.designingbuildings.co.uk\/wiki\/Risk\">risks<\/a>, integrating adaptation into \u2018<a href=\"https:\/\/www.designingbuildings.co.uk\/wiki\/Business\">business<\/a>\u00a0as usual\u2019 within or across organisations, and helping organisations to identify and understand impacts and\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.designingbuildings.co.uk\/wiki\/Uncertainty\">uncertainties<\/a>, and how these can be used to inform decisions. Creating a\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.designingbuildings.co.uk\/wiki\/Goods\">good<\/a>\u00a0adaptation plan helps organisations to\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.designingbuildings.co.uk\/wiki\/Report\">report<\/a>\u00a0adaptation actions as well.<\/p>\n<p>The\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.designingbuildings.co.uk\/wiki\/Standards\">standard<\/a>\u00a0can be used by any organisation with\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.designingbuildings.co.uk\/wiki\/Activities\">activities<\/a>,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.designingbuildings.co.uk\/wiki\/Products\">products<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.designingbuildings.co.uk\/wiki\/Services\">services<\/a>\u00a0that might be at\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.designingbuildings.co.uk\/wiki\/Risk\">risk<\/a>\u00a0from, or in some cases able to take advantage of,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.designingbuildings.co.uk\/wiki\/Climate_change\">climate change<\/a>. Its long-term outlook makes it especially suited to those owning,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.designingbuildings.co.uk\/wiki\/Designing\">designing<\/a>, operating and maintaining\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.designingbuildings.co.uk\/wiki\/Infrastructure\">infrastructure<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.designingbuildings.co.uk\/wiki\/Standards\">standard<\/a>\u00a0shows how to prioritise and develop effective, efficient and deliverable adaptation plans tailored to specific climate challenges faced. It sets out a consistent, structured and pragmatic approach to preventing or minimising the harm that\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.designingbuildings.co.uk\/wiki\/Climate_change\">climate change<\/a>could cause. To ensure choice and\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.designingbuildings.co.uk\/wiki\/Flexibility\">flexibility<\/a>, the content of the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.designingbuildings.co.uk\/wiki\/Standards\">standard<\/a>\u00a0is pitched at a high\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.designingbuildings.co.uk\/wiki\/Level\">level<\/a>, allowing\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.designingbuildings.co.uk\/wiki\/Activities\">activities<\/a>\u00a0to be tailored to the needs of an organisation.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Infrastructure application\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.designingbuildings.co.uk\/wiki\/Civil_engineer\">Civil engineers<\/a>\u00a0familiar with BS EN ISO 55001 on\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.designingbuildings.co.uk\/wiki\/Asset_management\">asset management<\/a>\u00a0or BS EN ISO 31000 on\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.designingbuildings.co.uk\/wiki\/Risk_management\">risk management<\/a>\u00a0(BSI, 2018) will recognise some of the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.designingbuildings.co.uk\/wiki\/Concept\">concepts<\/a>\u00a0used in BS EN ISO 14090 and should find it helpful in\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.designingbuildings.co.uk\/wiki\/Designing\">designing<\/a>\u00a0and implementing adaptation actions into policies, strategies, plans and actions related to\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.designingbuildings.co.uk\/wiki\/Infrastructure\">infrastructure<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The new\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.designingbuildings.co.uk\/wiki\/Standards\">standard<\/a>\u00a0originated from the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.designingbuildings.co.uk\/wiki\/UK\">UK<\/a>\u00a0and was convened by the author, a\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.designingbuildings.co.uk\/wiki\/Civil_engineer\">civil engineer<\/a>with extensive experience of working on climate adaptation within\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.designingbuildings.co.uk\/wiki\/Infrastructure_project\">infrastructure projects<\/a>\u00a0in the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.designingbuildings.co.uk\/wiki\/UK\">UK<\/a>, including Network Rail.<\/p>\n<p>The\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.designingbuildings.co.uk\/wiki\/Standards\">standard<\/a>\u00a0supports the elevated need for climate actions, called for in the Paris Climate\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.designingbuildings.co.uk\/wiki\/Agreement\">Agreement<\/a>\u00a0and also in the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/sustainabledevelopment.un.org\/sdg13\">UN\u2019s sustainable development goal 13<\/a>\u00a0on climate actions, one of the key goals identified by the ICE requiring \u2018urgent action to combat\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.designingbuildings.co.uk\/wiki\/Climate_change\">climate change<\/a>\u00a0and its impacts\u2019.<\/p>\n<p>The climate is changing and\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.designingbuildings.co.uk\/wiki\/Building\">buildings<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.designingbuildings.co.uk\/wiki\/Infrastructure\">infrastructure<\/a>\u00a0need to have adaptation built in to every part of them from\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.designingbuildings.co.uk\/wiki\/Design\">design<\/a>\u00a0to\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.designingbuildings.co.uk\/wiki\/Materials\">materials<\/a>.Having a\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.designingbuildings.co.uk\/wiki\/Goods\">good<\/a>\u00a0adaptation plan for organisations and\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.designingbuildings.co.uk\/wiki\/Project\">projects<\/a>, using a\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.designingbuildings.co.uk\/wiki\/Standards\">standard<\/a>\u00a0like BS EN ISO 14090, provides assurance of\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.designingbuildings.co.uk\/wiki\/Good_practice\">good practice<\/a>, not just for organisations but for regulators,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.designingbuildings.co.uk\/wiki\/Customer\">customers<\/a>\u00a0and investors looking for\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.designingbuildings.co.uk\/wiki\/Security\">security<\/a>\u00a0into the future.<\/p>\n<p><strong>About this article\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>This article was written by <a href=\"mailto:editor@ice.org.uk\">John Dora<\/a>.
