{"id":24250,"date":"2019-10-15T16:13:36","date_gmt":"2019-10-15T15:13:36","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/ihbconline.co.uk\/newsachive\/?p=24250"},"modified":"2019-10-15T16:37:41","modified_gmt":"2019-10-15T15:37:41","slug":"ihbc-responds-to-standard-occupational-classification-soc-consultation-highlights-needs-for-interdisciplinary-conservation-practitioners","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/newsblogs.ihbc.org.uk\/?p=24250","title":{"rendered":"IHBC responds to Standard Occupational Classification (SOC) consultation, highlights needs for interdisciplinary conservation practitioners"},"content":{"rendered":"<h3><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-full wp-image-18084\" src=\"https:\/\/newsblogs.ihbc.org.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/02\/IHBC_Consultations.png\" alt=\"IHBC consultations webpage\" width=\"300\" height=\"256\" \/>The IHBC has responded to the recent consultation from the Office for National Statistics (ONS) on prospective changes in the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.surveymonkey.com\/r\/ONS_SOC\">Standard Occupational Classification (SOC)<\/a> \u2013 the framework that enables all UK occupations to be classified according to skill level and specialisation \u2013 highlighting the need for the classification to accommodate the distinct interdisciplinary character of built and historic environment conservation practice.<\/h3>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p>The IHBC called for further detail because \u2018Interdisciplinary (cross sector) practices such as those undertaken by IHBC members in built and historic environment conservation practice are difficult to classify\u2019 under the current system, and across it.<\/p>\n<p>The IHBC also called for \u2018capacity for structured linkages across the SOCs to facilitate refinement of classification of roles and skills so they can reflect the real-world practices that increasingly demand cross-sector and interdisciplinary skills and outcomes\u2019, especially\u00a0 those tied to built and historic environment conservation practice.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p><strong>\u00a0<\/strong>The SOC consultation writes:<\/p>\n<p>The Standard Occupational Classification (SOC) is a recognised framework that enables all UK occupations to be classified according to skill level and specialisation.\u00a0 Some SOC users have expressed a need for a greater level of detail than is currently available.\u00a0 In response to this, the Office for National Statistics (ONS) is working with Warwick University\u2019s Institute for Employment Research (IER) to launch a\u00a0user engagement exercise looking at the level and nature of requirements.\u00a0 For now, the remit of this work remains exploratory.\u00a0 There are no plans currently to publish statistics to this more detailed level as it is unlikely there will be availability of large enough sample sizes to make the new job groups statistically viable.<\/p>\n<p>Your insight will however play a crucial role in contributing to the development of the framework.<\/p>\n<p>The\u00a0survey will remain open until Sept 30th 2019.
