{"id":24190,"date":"2019-10-11T16:40:54","date_gmt":"2019-10-11T15:40:54","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/ihbconline.co.uk\/newsachive\/?p=24190"},"modified":"2019-10-11T16:40:54","modified_gmt":"2019-10-11T15:40:54","slug":"thinking-ahead-to-ihbcs-2020-school-ihbcbrighton2020-the-value-of-arts-and-culture-in-place-shaping-from-the-arts-council","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/newsblogs.ihbc.org.uk\/?p=24190","title":{"rendered":"Thinking ahead to IHBC\u2019s 2020 School &#038; #IHBCBrighton2020: The value of arts and culture in place-shaping, from the Arts Council"},"content":{"rendered":"<h3><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-full wp-image-24191\" src=\"https:\/\/newsblogs.ihbc.org.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/10\/ValueArtsCulture_111019.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"421\" \/>The Arts Council has published research into whether and how an area&#8217;s arts and cultural offer attracts individuals and businesses to settle there, looking at six different places across the country: Birmingham, Halifax, Hastings, Redruth, Southampton and Stoke-on-Trent ), whether it\u2019s a factor in them staying there, and whether that cultural offer shapes a place\u2019s local identity.<\/h3>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p>The Arts Council writes:<\/p>\n<p>This research found art and culture positively impacts places in the following ways:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Promoting wellbeing \u2013 65% of people think that arts and culture are good for wellbeing, and 36% think arts and culture are \u2018essential to life\u2019.<\/li>\n<li>Attracting a variety of people to live and work in an area \u2013 44% of people who remained in an area, and 43% who moved to an area, cited arts and culture as an important factor in their decision \u2013 equal to the numbers of people citing schools.<\/li>\n<li>Helping build communities \u2013 49% of people think attending arts and cultural events helps them feel part of a community, with 68% thinking these events are very important for fostering community feeling.<\/li>\n<li>Supporting high streets \u2013 Arts and cultural organisations are helping to fill the gap left as retail moves away from high streets.
