Local Government (MHCLG), as part its \u2018Planning Practice Guide\u2019 (PPG), to illustrate \u2018how well-designed places that are beautiful, enduring and successful can be achieved in practice.\u2019<\/h3>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p>Good design is set out in the NDG under the following 10 characteristics:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Context \u2013 theguide\u00a0says that good\u00a0design\u00a0\u2019enhances the surroundings\u2019;<\/li>\n<li>Identity \u2013 gooddesign\u00a0is \u2018attractive and distinctive\u2019;<\/li>\n<li>Built form \u2013 gooddesign\u00a0delivers \u2018a coherent pattern of development\u2019;<\/li>\n<li>Movement \u2013 well-designedplaces should be \u2018accessible and easy to move around\u2019;<\/li>\n<li>Nature \u2013 gooddesign\u00a0should see nature \u2018enhanced and optimised\u2019;<\/li>\n<li>Public spaces \u2013 such places should be \u2018safe, social and inclusive\u2019;<\/li>\n<li>Uses \u2013 developments should be \u2018mixed and integrated\u2019;<\/li>\n<li>Homes and buildings \u2013 housing should be \u2018functional, healthy and sustainable\u2019;<\/li>\n<li>Resources \u2013 well-designedplaces and buildings are \u2018efficient and resilient\u2019, and \u2018conserve natural resources including land, water, energy and materials\u2019;<\/li>\n<li>Lifespan \u2013 developments should be \u2018made to last\u2019.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The value of \u2018heritage, local history and culture\u2019 is acknowledged as a key component in understanding the context of development, as while \u2018well-designed places and buildings are influenced positively by\u2026 the significance and setting of heritage assets and any other specific features that merit conserving and enhancing\u2026\u2019, and sensitive re-use or adaptation of buildings also is noted.<\/p>\n<p>The PPG also encourages councils to prepare strategic design policies, as well as non-strategic policies and more-local design guides.<\/p>\n<p>MHCLG writes:<\/p>\n<p>The national design guide sets out the characteristics of well-designed places and demonstrates what good design means in practice.<\/p>\n<p>It forms part of the government\u2019s collection of planning practice guidance and should be read alongside the separate planning practice guidance on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.uk\/guidance\/design\">design process and tools<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/assets.publishing.service.gov.uk\/government\/uploads\/system\/uploads\/attachment_data\/file\/835212\/National_Design_Guide.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">DOWNLOAD<\/a> the guide<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The new National Design Guide (NDG) has been published by England\u2019s Ministry of Housing, Communities &amp;
