{"id":24020,"date":"2019-09-24T16:50:28","date_gmt":"2019-09-24T15:50:28","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/ihbconline.co.uk\/newsachive\/?p=24020"},"modified":"2019-09-24T16:50:28","modified_gmt":"2019-09-24T15:50:28","slug":"thinking-ahead-to-ihbcs-2020-school-ihbcbrighton2020-retailers-shut-2870-stores-in-first-half-of-2019","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/newsblogs.ihbc.org.uk\/?p=24020","title":{"rendered":"Thinking ahead to IHBC\u2019s 2020 School &#038; #IHBCBrighton2020: Retailers shut 2,870 stores in first half of 2019"},"content":{"rendered":"<h3><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-24021\" src=\"https:\/\/newsblogs.ihbc.org.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/09\/bbc_240919-270x300.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"270\" height=\"300\" \/>The BBC has reported on research that shows about 16 shops closing every day as retailers restructure their businesses and more shopping moves online, new data that has a bearing on th 2020 <a href=\"http:\/\/brighton2020.ihbc.org.uk\/\">IHBC Annual School, on \u2018Old Towns : New Futures<\/a>\u2019.<\/h3>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p>BBC writes:<\/p>\n<p>A net 1,234 stores shut on Britain&#8217;s top 500 high streets in the first half of the year, according to research by PwC and the Local Data Company.<\/p>\n<p>That is up from 1,123 in the same period last year and the highest since the survey began in 2010.<\/p>\n<p>Fashion retailers saw the biggest declines in the period, followed by restaurants, estate agents and pubs.<\/p>\n<p>However, there were more openings of takeaways and sport and health clubs.<\/p>\n<p>Lisa Hooker, consumer markets leader at PwC, said: \u2018The decline in store numbers in the first half of 2019 shows that there&#8217;s been no let-up in the changing ways that people shop and the cost pressures\u2026.\u2019<\/p>\n<p>She said retailers had to invest more in making stores \u2018relevant to today&#8217;s consumers\u2019, but added that \u2018new and different types of operators\u2019 needed encouragement to fill vacant space.<\/p>\n<p>According to PwC, 1,634 stores opened in the six months to the end of June &#8211; a 4% increase on the same period last year &#8211; while 2,868 stores shut.
