It collects information about people\u2019s housing circumstances and the condition and energy efficiency of housing in England.<\/p>\n<p>It has 2\u00a0component surveys:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>a household interview<\/li>\n<li>a physical inspection of a sub sample of the properties<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Survey users<br \/>\n<\/strong>A\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.uk\/guidance\/english-housing-survey-guidance-and-methodology\">detailed guide for survey users<\/a>\u00a0provides information about:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>the background to the survey and how the data are used<\/li>\n<li>the questionnaire and physical survey form<\/li>\n<li>technical survey methodology<\/li>\n<li>data quality<\/li>\n<li>how we engage with our wider user community<\/li>\n<li>the\u00a0revisions policy<\/li>\n<li>the\u00a0dissemination strategy<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Households selected for the survey<br \/>\n<\/strong>Each year a sample of addresses is drawn at random from a list of private addresses held by the Royal Mail. Householders at those addresses are invited to take part in the survey and will receive an initial letter from our contractor NatCen Social Research.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.uk\/guidance\/english-housing-survey-information-for-households\">Background information<\/a>\u00a0about the survey is available for households selected to take part in the survey.<\/p>\n<p><strong>50 years of the English Housing Survey<br \/>\n<\/strong>2017 is the 50th anniversary of the first national housing survey. To mark this anniversary we have published a\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.uk\/government\/publications\/50-years-of-the-english-housing-survey\">comparison of the 1967 housing survey with the English Housing Survey in 2017<\/a>\u2026<\/p>\n<p><strong>Datasets<br \/>\n<\/strong>English Housing Survey\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.uk\/guidance\/english-housing-survey-datasets-and-bespoke-analysis\">datasets<\/a>\u00a0are made available via the UK Data Service for users who want to undertake secondary analysis.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Reports<br \/>\n<\/strong>Each year initial results are published in a headline report at the beginning of the year. This is followed by a series of more detailed reports released in the summer.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Live tables<br \/>\n<\/strong>The English Housing Survey\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.uk\/government\/collections\/english-housing-survey-live-tables\">live tables<\/a>\u00a0are a collection of detailed time series data tables on people\u2019s housing circumstances and the condition and energy efficiency of the English housing stock.
