{"id":21973,"date":"2019-03-12T16:16:02","date_gmt":"2019-03-12T16:16:02","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/ihbconline.co.uk\/newsachive\/?p=21973"},"modified":"2019-03-11T18:47:39","modified_gmt":"2019-03-11T18:47:39","slug":"new-scheme-to-support-scotlands-town-centres","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/newsblogs.ihbc.org.uk\/?p=21973","title":{"rendered":"New scheme to support Scotland\u2019s town centres"},"content":{"rendered":"<h3><a href=\"https:\/\/newsblogs.ihbc.org.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/03\/Oban_waterfront_at_night_Fiona_Newton.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-21974\" src=\"https:\/\/newsblogs.ihbc.org.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/03\/Oban_waterfront_at_night_Fiona_Newton-300x210.png\" alt=\"waterfront at night\" width=\"300\" height=\"210\" \/><\/a>The Town Centre Fund is a new \u00a350 million fund to help boost Scotland\u2019s town centres, which has been set up in partnership with COSLA and witgh uses that \u2018could include the re-purposing of empty buildings for housing or social and community enterprises\u2019.<\/h3>\n<h6><em>image: Oban by Fiona Newton<\/em><\/h6>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p>The Scottish Government writes:<\/p>\n<p>The Town Centre Fund, which has been set up in partnership with COSLA, is supporting councils to ensure their high streets are more diverse, sustainable and successful in the face of changing and evolving retail patterns.<\/p>\n<p>It will be for local authorities to allocate this fund against the themes of the Town Centre Action Plan.<\/p>\n<p>The money will fund a wide range of investments which will make town centres more vibrant, enterprising, and accessible.<\/p>\n<p>This could include the re-purposing of empty buildings for housing or social and community enterprises.<\/p>\n<p>Speaking as he announced the launch of the fund, Economy Secretary Derek Mackay said: \u2018Town centres are facing challenges across Scotland in adapting to a changing retail climate, and it is important that we help them to diversify and adjust to overcome these challenges.<\/p>\n<p>\u2018I want to make sure we can keep life in our high streets, and ensure they continue to be thriving places for communities to live, work and enjoy.<\/p>\n<p>\u2018This \u00a350 million fund will enable local authorities to stimulate and support a wide range of investments which will encourage town centres to diversify and flourish, and create an increase in footfall through local improvements and partnerships.<\/p>\n<p>\u2018It is part of a wider boost to the economy through providing more than \u00a35 billion of capital investment to grow and modernise Scotland\u2019s infrastructure, and a wider package of support to businesses, including maintaining a competitive business rates package and providing the most generous package of non-domestic rates reliefs anywhere in the UK.\u2019<\/p>\n<p>Councillor Steven Heddle, COSLA\u2019s Environment and Economy Spokesperson said:\u00a0 \u2018Local Economic Development drives so much of the other vital things that Councils do on behalf of our Communities.\u00a0 This was a message we promoted as part of our essential services campaign ahead of this year\u2019s budget.\u00a0 We were clear that inclusive growth must be supported through investment in Local Government.<\/p>\n<p>\u2018We welcome today\u2019s announcement of the \u00a350 million for investment in our towns and we will continue to work with Scottish Government on our shared priority of Inclusive Growth and growing Scotland\u2019s Economy.\u2019\u2026<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.scot\/news\/new-scheme-to-support-town-centres\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Read more&#8230;.<\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The Town Centre Fund is a new \u00a350 million fund to help boost Scotland\u2019s town centres, which has been set up in partnership with COSLA and witgh uses that \u2018could include the re-purposing of empty buildings for housing or social &hellip;
