\n<\/strong>English Heritage\u00a0will recommend Rogers\u2019 building \u2019the day it turns 30\u2019

\nRichard Rogers\u2019 seminal Lloyd\u2019s Building is set to be listed next year at a \u201cvery high grade\u201d to mark the 30th anniversary of its start on site, English Heritage has revealed.<\/p>\n

Roger Bowdler, head of listing at EH, will recommend it for listing next summer and said he could not rule out grade I status. \u201cWe could not list it before it was 30, unless it had actually been at risk, and we will be recommending it for listing the day it turns 30,\u201d he said. \u201cIt will be at a very high grade \u2013 that is certain.\u201d<\/p>\n

The building celebrates two birthdays next year: the 30th anniversary of work commencing is in early June; and the 25th anniversary of its completion is in November. Rogers and\u00a0Lloyd\u2019s of London\u00a0are already planning celebrations around the latter, and a Lloyd\u2019s spokeswoman welcomed news of its probable listing.<\/p>\n

Catherine Croft, director of the 20th Century Society, also praised the decision. \u00a0The society first recommended the Lloyd\u2019s Building for listing in 2008, but it was not backed by EH and was turned down by the then architecture minister\u00a0Margaret Hodge\u00a0on the grounds that it was too recent, and not in imminent danger of demolition. \u00a0But Croft raised concerns about the \u201c30-year rule\u201d saying key buildings could easily be ruined by a \u201cseries of smaller alterations\u201d.<\/p>\n

In the case of Lloyd\u2019s, she pointed out that there have already been a series of \u201csmall-scale but significant\u201d changes to its lobby and foyer. \u201cIt is a classic case of a building which needs to have management guidelines,\u201d she said. \u00a0\u201cIt is an extraordinary and fluent example of hi-tech style, built on an incredibly sensitive site, and to a very high spec.\u201d<\/p>\n

The Lloyd\u2019s listing will be a one-off, but EH is also preparing to unveil a series of listings programmes for 2011, when it publishes its National Heritage Protection plan next week. \u00a0This will contain suggestions for more \u201cthematic work\u201d, including programmes to list civic buildings,\u00a0industrial heritage\u00a0sites and \u2013 most urgently \u2013 military sites.<\/p>\n

Bowdler said that EH had concerns over the Ministry of Defence\u2019s policy of selling off out-of-commission sites for redevelopment, and was keen to list everything from aerodromes to barracks to protect them from the bulldozer.<\/p>\n
