Turner Prize-winning artist Grayson Perry was announced as the campaign\u2019s first Patron at on Tuesday\u2013 the anniversary of the founding of the DMA in 1869. The Association now is now fundraising to restore the Grade II-listed site and add modern facilities to host concerts, conferences, film screenings, educational activities and to serve as a community hub.<\/p>\n<p>Speaking to the event via video, Mr Perry said: \u2018The Durham Miners Gala is a fantastic event. I couldn\u2019t believe how moved I was when I went there. Just seeing those textile banners swaying through the crowds; the music of the bands swelling. I think it\u2019s the most poignant and pure expression of working class culture. I\u2019m very proud to be Patron of The Redhills Appeal. This is a way to preserve and broadcast an amazingly rich heritage. Support The Redhills Appeal.\u2019<\/p>\n<p>DMA secretary Alan Cummings said: \u2018The success of the appeal will enable us to secure the future of the Miners Hall \u2013 restored, renewed and ready to hand over to the people. The success of The Redhills Appeal will ensure that the story of the Durham miners continues to be written for the next 150 years and beyond.The motto of the Durham miners is: \u2018the past we inherit, the future we build\u2019. We are determined to honour that motto; to honour all those who\u2019ve gone before, and to serve those to come.\u2019<\/p>\n<p>Actor Charlie Hardwick spoke at the event, urging people to support The Redhills Appeal. She said: \u2018We\u2019re sending a message to the world that the Durham miners live on; that all they stood for lives on. That their young\u2019uns will carry this remarkable heritage and culture forward.
