Justin Webber, IHBC East Midlands Branch School Organizing Committee Chair said: \u2018For the keynote speaker, the branch were keen to find an inspirational global figure that could explore the conference theme at both a high level and through the context of some of the most challenging urban environments on the planet.\u2019<\/p>\n

\u2018Dr Zaki Aslan is a highly respected figure in the international heritage sector and brings a unique perspective as the Director of the ICCROM-ATHAR Conservation Centre in Sharjah and as the Regional Representative of ICCROM for the Arab States.\u2019<\/p>\n

\u2018The opportunity to learn from a leading expert on global best practice is a rare one and we are excited by the opportunities to reappraise our understanding of conservation philosophy through the learning points he will bring.\u2019<\/p>\n

\u2018With a special understanding of building conservation in those areas of the Middle East where conflict and other existential threats to heritage assets are currently very real, this promises to be a visually arresting presentation that will provide extensive talking points.\u2019<\/p>\n

Zaki Aslan
\n<\/u><\/strong>Zaki Aslan is a conservation architect and Director of the ICCROM\u2019s Regional Conservation Centre in Sharjah (ICCROM-Sharjah)<\/p>\n

He provided technical advice to the ICCROM’s Member States on issues related including heritage conservation, management and national planning\/ policies and worked as consultant to UNESCO, EU, and ICCROM on projects in heritage conservation and management in the Arab countries.<\/p>\n

He worked as project manager in the mid-nineties, when he was engaged in the US-funded Cultural Resource Management Program in Jordan (CRM), and worked on the \u2018Documentation and Conservation of Stone Monuments\u2019 in the World Heritage Site of Petra (after studying at the Bavarian State Conservation Office in Germany in 1994).<\/p>\n

Aslan is also honorary senior lecturer at University College London, and served as adjunct professor at the American University of Sharjah in Heritage Conservation, and Islamic Art and Architecture. He is member of the editorial board of the \u2018Journal of Conservation and Management of Archaeological Sites<\/em>\u2019, U.K., and Vice President of ICOMOS-UAE.<\/p>\n

The IHBC School will cover all manner of possible risk to heritage and look at how risk can be managed and resilience developed.\u00a0 The focus of the School will include Fire, Structural failure, Terrorism, Heritage at Risk, Flooding, Law & Philosophy.<\/p>\n
