\n<\/strong>The Department for Culture Media and Sport would like to invite applications for two trustee roles at the Heritage Lottery Fund \/ National Heritage Memorial Fund, with applications to arrive not later than 5pm, Monday 13 December 2010 and interviews for shortlisted candidates expected to be held on Thursday 10 February.
\n<\/span>
\nTime Commitment
\n<\/span>The Trustees will need to give an average of 2-3 days per month to HLF\/NHMF business, plus time to read the necessary papers.<\/p>\n

Currently Board meetings occur monthly, except for August, and take place in London usually on a Tuesday. \u00a0The duration of the meetings varies but on average they begin at 9:30am and usually finish around 3pm.<\/p>\n

Remuneration
\n<\/span>The Trustees will be entitled to claim an allowance of \u00a36,560 per year, which will be paid monthly. \u00a0Reasonable expenses will be reimbursed.<\/p>\n

Term of Appointment
\n<\/span>The appointments will be for three years. \u00a0Re-appointment for a second term may be made, subject to a satisfactory performance assessment and at the discretion of the Prime Minister. \u00a0In order to smooth the turnover of Board appointments, a second term of less than three years may be offered.<\/p>\n

Background
\n<\/span>The National Heritage Memorial Fund (NHMF) is the fund of last resort for the nation\u2019s heritage, coming to the rescue by funding emergency acquisitions. \u00a0NHMF receives grant in aid from DCMS and will have a grants budget of \u00a35m per year from 2011- 15, and is unique in its ability to save such a wide range of heritage treasures and masterpieces from trains to paintings, sculptures, wildlife havens and manuscripts. \u00a0In 1994, the NHMF Trustees were also given the major task of distributing the heritage share of Lottery money for good causes, which it now operates through the Heritage Lottery Fund. \u00a0There is further information on the impact of HLF and NHMF in the linked brochure.<\/p>\n

The Roles
\n<\/span>The HLF\/NHMF Chair and 14 Trustees are appointed by the Prime Minister. \u00a0They receive advice from heritage experts and work within laws made by Parliament and directions given by Government. \u00a0Their decisions about individual applications and matters of policy are made entirely independently.<\/p>\n

The People
\n<\/span>Candidates for the Trustee posts will be able to demonstrate the following essential qualities:
\n* A broad appreciation of the UK’s heritage, its historical, social and political context, and a commitment to promoting its public understanding and enjoyment to the widest possible audience
\n* A commitment to the aims and strategic objectives of NHMF and HLF across the whole of the UK
\n* An understanding of the public and legislative environment within which Lottery bodies operate
\n* A track record of achievement including evidence of leadership
\n* An ability to think strategically and analytically about the deployment of the Funds’ grants in order to fulfill their \u00a0objectives
\n* Strong skills in persuading and influencing; comfortable speaking in public fora.<\/p>\n

It will also be essential to meet at least one of the following:
\n* Professional knowledge and senior level experience of a broad range of historic environment issues in relation to the UK\u2019s heritage
\n* Experience in engaging people from black, Asian and minority ethnic (BAME) communities in culture and\/or heritage, and in building capacity in these communities
\n* Knowledge of the heritage of, or actively engaged with stakeholder networks in the North East, or Yorkshire and Humber, or East Midlands, or East of England
\n* Professional knowledge and senior level experience of environmental sustainability in relation to the UK\u2019s heritage.<\/p>\n

In making these appointments, consideration will be given as to how candidates\u2019 skills and experience complement those of the existing Trustees.<\/p>\n
