The guide explores major ecclesiastical monuments at Romsey, the Bishop of Winchester\u2019s palace at Bishops Waltham, and the remains of the great post-Dissolution houses at Beaulieu and Titchfield.\u00a0At Southampton is one of England\u2019s best preserved medieval town\u00a0walls, while at Portsmouth the structures of the 18th- and 19th-century Royal Navy dockyard are among the most important of their kind.\u00a0Amid\u00a0all this beauty are traces of conflict, from the Roman fort at Portchester, to the coastal castles of Henry VIII\u2019s rule, to the relics of the Normandy invasions of 1944.<\/p>\n<p>Charles O\u2019Brien\u00a0is joint series editor of the Pevsner Architectural Guides.\u00a0Bruce Bailey\u00a0is author of the revised edition of\u00a0<em>Northamptonshire<\/em>\u00a0in the Buildings of England series.\u00a0Nikolaus Pevsner\u00a0was\u00a0the series founder.\u00a0David W.
