{"id":20458,"date":"2018-10-12T17:51:10","date_gmt":"2018-10-12T16:51:10","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/ihbconline.co.uk\/newsachive\/?p=20458"},"modified":"2018-10-16T17:36:02","modified_gmt":"2018-10-16T16:36:02","slug":"ihbc-south-branch-on-yearning-for-timelessness-new-architecture-in-historic-settings-in-talks-and-visits-in-oxford-26-oct","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/newsblogs.ihbc.org.uk\/?p=20458","title":{"rendered":"IHBC South Branch on \u2018Yearning for Timelessness\u2026\u2019: New architecture in historic settings, in talks and visits in Oxford, 26 Oct"},"content":{"rendered":"<h3><a href=\"https:\/\/newsblogs.ihbc.org.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/10\/Oxford_Uni_SO_Branch2018.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright wp-image-20358\" src=\"https:\/\/newsblogs.ihbc.org.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/10\/Oxford_Uni_SO_Branch2018.png\" alt=\"building\" width=\"262\" height=\"179\" \/><\/a>IHBC\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ihbc.org.uk\/branches\/south\/index.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">South Branch<\/a> conference on October 26 will look at \u2018Modern architecture in historic settings\u2019 with expert talks and site visits offering top-notch CPD with exceptional settings at the IHBC\u2019s familiar value that includes:<\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>a specialist tour of Keble Triangle<\/li>\n<li>Geoffrey Tyack, President, Oxfordshire Architectural and Historical Society, introducing \u2018Modern Oxford\u2019 and<\/li>\n<li>Architect Sandy Wright on \u2018Student accommodation in the 70s and 80s: The Last Building Boom in Oxford\u2019<\/li>\n<li>Debbie Dance OBE, Director of Oxford Preservation Trust, on 40 Years of OPT Awards.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p>IHBC South\u00a0Branch Chair Jonathan Clarke said: \u2018With a title adapted from Frank Gehry \u2013 \u2018Architecture should speak of its time and place, but yearn for timelessness\u2019 \u2013 the IHBC\u2019s Branch conference this year is all about exploring the difficult balance needed when adding and fitting in new architecture and buildings into historic settings.\u2019<\/p>\n<p>\u2018When it\u2019s done well it contributes so much more than the sum of the parts, but when done poorly or unimaginatively not only does it look cumbersome and jarring it also diminishes the historic value of what was already there.\u2019<\/p>\n<p>\u2018As people with a passion for conserving historic buildings and their settings, this is very timely, not least given the huge development pressures that so many historic spaces are now under.\u2019<\/p>\n<p>\u2018Oxford provides a brilliant backdrop for such a conference and the walking tour after lunch around the Keble Triangle will highlight some of the many challenges not least the difficulties of maintaining and managing more recent additions in such historic settings.\u2019<\/p>\n<p>Speakers include:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Alan Berman<\/li>\n<li>Geoffrey Tyack<\/li>\n<li>Sandy Wright<\/li>\n<li>Stuart Cade<\/li>\n<li>Charles Hendry &amp;
