These are challenging times for planners and the profession but I see planning as being very much part of the solution in laying the foundations for investment in infrastructure, services, job and home creation. It is also one of the key tools for delivering the aspirations of communities and in shaping and protecting the environment. For RTPI members, one of my key aims will be to continue to make sure we are providing the best possible service at an affordable cost, as well as having a voice that is heard at the very highest levels of decision-making so we can work constructively and effectively with the Government, helping to develop a planning system which works, and one that is supported by good practice.
