IHBC Director Se\u00e1n O\u2019Reilly said: \u2018As our summary listing below demonstrates, new advertisements posted by employers on the IHBC\u2019s \u2018Jobs etc\u2019<\/em> service continue to highlight the need for a truly diverse range of conservation-related skills among new staff\u2019.<\/p>\n

\u2018Many posts continue to cover the more familiar public sector conservation and design adviser roles, such as Swindon\u2019s search for a conservation officer.\u00a0 There is also the less typical \u2018dual\u2019 role offered by Publica, in the form of its \u2018(Senior) Conservation and Design Officer\u2019 which is \u2018based in Cirencester and working on behalf of Cotswold District Council.\u2019<\/p>\n

Publica describes itself as a \u2018Council owned company delivering services on behalf of Cotswold District Council\u2019, in an arrangement that is becoming increasingly common. \u00a0Of course, regardless of the technicalities of employer, the obligations and duties on a public servant carrying out the role of conservation officer \u2013 both in terms of practice and ethics \u2013 are consistent, and must remain focused on public good and interest.\u2019<\/p>\n

\u2018In such \u2018Conservation Officer\u2019-type roles too, by extension, skills must be closely aligned with the international ICOMOS standards and interdisciplinary conservation models.\u00a0 ICOMOS offers the core international statements that underpin the IHBC\u2019s interdisciplinary conservation accreditation.\u00a0 These in turn represent uniquely well the skills, knowledge and understanding needed to carry out the relevant statutory duties competently and effectively, for the UK and beyond.\u2019<\/p>\n

\u2018Well represented in the list below too are roles that need softer but still core interdisciplinary conservation skills sets.\u00a0 These include Perth & Kinross Heritage Trust\u2019s \u2018Skills Training Officer\u2019, and the Diocese of Oxford\u2019s \u2018Assistant Church Buildings Officer\u2019.<\/p>\n

\u2018More striking in this recent listing is the emphatically proactive role described by the Lake District National Park Authority for its \u2018Strategy and Partnership Adviser: Conservation Officer\u2019.<\/p>\n

This aim of the role is to \u2018take forward conservation area enhancements, managing the conservation area appraisal and management plan process whilst working with consultants to deliver them\u2019.<\/p>\n

Self-evidently, this requires a skills set particularly focused on regeneration and development, and needs core competences often dangerously sidelined in current training and policy initiatives from some national heritage agencies.\u2019<\/p>\n
