Mr Neville said he was \u2018delighted\u2019 but campaigners said they were \u2018extremely disappointed\u2019.<\/p>\n<p>HE had objected to the original St Michael&#8217;s scheme, which included two skyscrapers and the demolition of the Sir Ralph Abercromby pub, on the grounds that it would \u2018erase\u2019 the area&#8217;s history\u2026<\/p>\n<p>In a statement, the secretary of state for Housing, Communities and Local Government confirmed the government would not use its power to \u2018call in\u2019 the planning decision, adding \u2018he is content that it should be determined by the local planning authority\u2019&#8230;<\/p>\n<p>The Victorian Society was among conservation groups which had objected to the scheme. Conservation adviser Anna Shelley said the scheme, even after revisions, would \u2018cause substantial harm\u2019 to the \u2018significance\u2019 of the city&#8217;s grade I-listed and \u2018nationally important\u2019 town hall.
