10-11 May<\/span>
\nNorth West Branch – Practical Training Day: Roofing and Hot Mixed Traditional Mortars<\/strong><\/p>\n

The THI and the Natural Building Centre \u2013 Llanwrst, are to deliver a practical training day delivering traditional random pegged roofing and hot mixed traditional mortars. All of which will be done and applied on a live project, with the building dating back as far as 1498!<\/p>\n

The days will be delivered for FREE, with lunch provided.<\/p>\n

Additionally on the 10th, FREE return transport will be available from Prescot-Llanwrst.<\/p>\n

On the 11th attendees are expected to make their own travel arrangements.<\/p>\n

11 May<\/span>
\nScotland Branch – Conservation Area Management Training Day<\/strong>
\n10.00am – 4.00pm
\nCouncil Buildings, Ayr
\nCarrick Centre, Maybole<\/p>\n

The Ayrshire day will look at conservation area management in Ayr from<\/p>\n

soon after designation in July 1968 to the present day, as major proposals by Ayr Renaissance to develop the town centre mean radical surgery in the High Street. We will look at the Conservation Area Appraisal for Central Ayr, assess the impact of the recent THI, and look at strategic ways forward.<\/p>\n

Next we will learn about neighbouring Maybole, find out about community-led proposals for enhancing its Conservation Area and discuss with consultants the ongoing preparation of its CA Management Plan.<\/p>\n

\nSouth Branch –\u00a0<\/strong>Naval Gazing: Portsmouth Historic Dockyards
\n<\/strong>This IHBC South Branch conference will be exploring how some of the nation\u2019s most precious naval assets are cared for, as well as the docks and buildings which house them and their related heritage.<\/p>\n

\n<\/span>Yorkshire Branch –\u00a0<\/strong>Tour of Halifax Piece Hall
\n<\/strong>The Piece Hall, Blackledge, Halifax HX1 1RE<\/p>\n

The Piece Hall is one of Britain\u2019s most extraordinary buildings. Built in 1779 to trade \u2018pieces\u2019 of cloth, it is now the UK\u2019s sole surviving cloth hall and offers a unique window back into our past.<\/p>\n

Its near 250-year history has seen the building tale on many transformations \u2013 in Georgian times as a place for trading locally made \u2018Kersey\u2019 and other cloth, later as a gathering point for Victorian spectacles and political rallies. It then became a wholesale marker, before being transformed into a visitor attraction and, most recently, undergoing an extensive conservation programme.<\/p>\n

During your visit, we will take you on a journey spanning almost quarter of a millennium. You will meet characters from the past and hear fascinating stories about this truly incredible building.<\/p>\n

We are holding another Membership Application Training Event – the main aim of which is to assist people in upgrading their membership from either\u00a0Affiliate\/Associate to Full membership.<\/p>\n

There will be a presentation\u00a0from Kate Kendall, IHBC Education, Training & Standards Liaison Officer followed by small group discussions.<\/p>\n

Kate Kendall said: ‘These events are a great way for prospective applicants to find out how to understand their skills, knowledge and experience in the context of IHBC membership criteria and accreditation.\u00a0 And all this is free too, offered to anyone interested in IHBC membership as part of the IHBC’s charitable support for the care of the built and historic environment.’<\/p>\n

\n<\/span>West Midlands Branch – Warley Woods, Repton 200, Community Trusts and open space management
\n<\/strong>Venue: Warley Woods Community Trust, The Pavilion, 101 Lightwoods Hill,\u00a0Smethwick, B67 5ED<\/p>\n

Warley Woods in Smethwick was a landscape originally designed by Humphry Repton. The landscape is now managed by a Community Trust. The day will explore Humphry Repton\u2019s legacy in the West Midlands and will also interrogate why a community trust has taken on Warley Woods and how they manage it. The day will include a guided tour.<\/p>\n
