\"building\"<\/a>Catriona Mackie writes about \u2019The island in context\u2019 in the latest edition of IHBC\u2019s Context,<\/em> themed on the Isle of Man, setting out its planning system, currently under review, and the opportunities to amend or radically redesign planning and conservation policy and legislation.<\/h3>\n

Catriona Mackie writes:<\/p>\n

\u2018Planning policy is laid out in the island\u2019s development plan, which combines the government\u2019s strategic plan and a series of local and area plans. The strategic plan provides the framework for land use and development. Work is under way to replace outdated local plans with a series of broader area plans. These area plans identify potential areas for development, and include development briefs for significant sites. They also identify buildings potentially worthy of inclusion on the protected buildings register (comparable to listing in the UK)\u2026\u2019<\/p>\n

In conclusion, she writes that: \u2018Part of the problem is that we currently have relatively little information about the island\u2019s vernacular buildings, particularly those in the countryside. It is therefore difficult to evaluate the architectural or historic significance of individual properties. There are currently no plans for an audit of the island\u2019s wider historic built environment. With the planning system under review, there is now an opportunity for government to amend, or radically redesign, planning and conservation policy and legislation. There seems to be widespread support for significant changes, at both political and officer-levels. Perhaps the biggest challenge will be to find a way to adequately resource planning and conservation during the current period of continued economic instability.\u2019<\/p>\n
