{"id":1821,"date":"2010-09-29T09:35:36","date_gmt":"2010-09-29T09:35:36","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/ihbconline.co.uk\/newsachive\/?p=1821"},"modified":"2010-09-29T09:35:36","modified_gmt":"2010-09-29T09:35:36","slug":"hlf-invests-15m-in-uk-projects","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/newsblogs.ihbc.org.uk\/?p=1821","title":{"rendered":"HLF invests \u00a315m in UK projects"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span><strong><br \/>\n<\/strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">The Heritage Lottery Fund (HLF) has announced confirmed funding  of \u00a315m for four very different heritage projects: the William Morris  Gallery in Waltham Forest \u2019s Lloyd Park; the historic Cromford Mills in  the Peak District; York\u2019s internationally famous Minster; and a  collection of aerial photographs that chart the changing <span style=\"color: #323232;\">face of Britain.<\/p>\n<p><\/span><\/span>Initial support has also been awarded for projects across the  UK in Belfast, Glasgow, Pontypridd, London, Portsmouth and  Northumberland.<\/p>\n<p>Carole Souter, Chief Executive of HLF, said: \u2018It\u2019s fantastic to be able  to invest in such a breadth of heritage projects &#8211; from the traditional  to the more modern &#8211; and for that investment to be able to reach all  four corners of the UK. Heritage can mean so many different things, from  a collection of aerial photographs reflecting the changing landscape to  a spectacular Gothic cathedral. The Heritage Lottery Fund is passionate  about making possible visionary projects like these that will have a  huge impact on people\u2019s lives.\u2019<\/p>\n<p>The confirmed grants are awarded to:<br \/>\n<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span>&#8211; <em>The William \u00a0Morris Gallery , London \u2013 \u00a31.5m \u2013 <\/em>gallery devoted to one of England &#8216;s best-known designers<br \/>\n&#8211; <em>Cromford Mills, Derbyshire &#8211; \u00a32m &#8211; <\/em> the world\u2019s first successful water-powered cotton spinning mills<br \/>\n&#8211; <em>Britain from Above: Aerofilms, UK-wide (Swindon,<span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"> <\/span> Edinburgh , Aberystwyth) \u2013 \u00a31.7m \u2013 <\/em>an archive of over a million aerial photographs of Britain taken from 1919 to 2006.<br \/>\n&#8211; <em>York Minster, York \u2013 \u00a39.7m &#8211; <\/em>one of the UK \u2019s most glorious historic cathedrals.<br \/>\n<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><span><br \/>\nInitial HLF support has been granted to the following projects:<br \/>\n<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span>&#8211; <em>Nomadic and Hamilton Dock, Belfast \u2013 \u00a32.6m HLF bid &#8211; <\/em>the last surviving White Star vessel in the world and only remaining link to <em>RMS Titanic.<br \/>\n<\/em>&#8211; King\u2019s Theatre, Glasgow \u00a0\u2013 \u00a31.9m HLF bid \u2013 conservation of the  theatre and celebrating its history though an intergenerational oral  history project<br \/>\n&#8211; <em>Ynysangharad Park Lido, Pontypridd \u2013 \u00a32.1m HLF bid \u2013 <\/em>restoration of<em> <\/em>one of the best preserved lidos in the country.<br \/>\n&#8211; <em>The New Design \u00a0Museum , London \u00a0\u2013 \u00a34.9m HLF bid &#8211; <\/em>Britain\u2019s leading contemporary design collection to be re-housed<br \/>\n&#8211; <em>National Museum \u00a0of the Royal Navy, Portsmouth \u2013 \u00a31.2m HLF bid \u2013 <\/em>new gallery<em> <\/em>for one of Britain \u2019s oldest maritime museums<br \/>\n&#8211; <em>Hexham Abbey, Northumberland \u2013\u00a31.8m HLF bid \u2013 <\/em>refurbishment of  the monastic buildings lost in the Reformation and new learning  facilities to engage the community with the Abbey&#8217;s rich heritage.<br \/>\n<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><span><em><br \/>\n<\/em><br \/>\n<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Further detail as to the nature of these projects is as follows:<br \/>\n<\/span><br \/>\n&#8211; <em>The William \u00a0Morris Gallery , Waltham Forest , London \u2013 confirmed grant of \u00a31.5m<\/em><br \/>\nHome to the William Morris family from 1848 to 1856, the Gallery is  devoted to one of England &#8216;s best-known designers and houses vibrant  collections illustrating Morris&#8217; life, achievements, political works and  continuing influence. The collection includes woven and printed  fabrics, ceramics, wallpaper and furniture. The project will provide  bigger exhibition spaces and education and volunteering opportunities  for the local community.<\/p>\n<p>&#8211; <em>Cromford Mills, Derbyshire \u2013 confirmed grant of \u00a32m<\/em><br \/>\nCromford Mills, the world\u2019s first successful water-powered cotton  spinning mills, were built in 1771 by industrial pioneer, Sir Richard  Arkwright. HLF\u2019s grant will enable extensive repairs and conversion of  the Grade I listed \u2018Building 17\u2019 (the largest surviving building on  site) into a gateway to the Derwent Valley Mills World Heritage Site.  \u00a0The Building\u2019s upper floors will also be repaired and brought back into  use and new staff will be employed to lead activity programmes for  schools, visitors and volunteers.<\/p>\n<p>&#8211; <em>Britain from Above: Aerofilms, UK-wide (including Swindon,<span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"> <\/span> Edinburgh , Aberystwyth) \u2013 confirmed grant of \u00a31.7m<br \/>\n<\/em>This fascinating archive comprises over a million aerial photographs  of Britain taken from 1919 to 2006. The collection was created by  Aerofilms, a pioneering air survey company set up by First World War  veterans in 1919. HLF\u2019s support will enable the cataloguing and  digitisation of 95,000 images from the earliest part of the collection  (from 1919-1953), making it far easier for people to use and enjoy. A  programme of online volunteering, local community projects and  exhibitions will help raise awareness of the collections for a wide  range of audiences.<\/p>\n<p>&#8211; <em>York Minster, York \u2013 confirmed grant of \u00a39.7m<\/em><br \/>\nYork Minster is one of this country\u2019s most glorious historic cathedrals. The project will <span style=\"color: #323232;\">conserve the stonework of the Minster&#8217;s East end and reveal the full glory of the 15th-century stained glass in the <\/span>Apocalypse  section of the Great East Window. New training and volunteering  opportunities will be put in place, encouraging people to learn skills  such as stone masonry, stained glass conservation and how to become an  effective guide.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">HLF awards \u00a3709,600 development funding to a further six projects<\/span>.<br \/>\nThe following projects have been awarded a first-round pass\u00b2 and they  can now move on to the next stage of their plans to apply for a full  grant:<\/p>\n<p>&#8211; <em>Nomadic and Hamilton \u00a0Dock, Belfast \u00a0\u2013 initial support for a \u00a32.6m HLF bid<\/em><br \/>\n<em>SS Nomadic<\/em> is the last surviving White Star vessel in the world and the only remaining link to <em>RMS Titanic. <\/em>Designed  and built by Harland &amp; Wolff and launched on 25 April 1911, her  role was to ferry passengers from Cherbourg to the Titanic on her  fateful voyage. The project aims to restore both the <em>SS Nomadic<\/em> and the Hamilton Graving Dock and use them as learning spaces. \u00a0Information and artefacts relating to the <em>SS Nomadic<\/em> and the dock will be brought together telling the story of the shipyards and the wider industries operating during the period.<\/p>\n<p>&#8211; <em>King\u2019s Theatre, Glasgow \u00a0\u2013 initial support for a \u00a31.9m HLF bid, including \u00a351,000 development funding<br \/>\n<\/em>The King\u2019s Theatre, designed by prolific theatre architect Frank  Matcham in 1904, is one of the best-preserved examples of his work. The  project aims to conserve the theatre and celebrate its role within  Glasgow \u2019s thriving cultural scene, while celebrating its fascinating  history though a wide-ranging intergenerational oral history project.<\/p>\n<p>&#8211; <em>Ynysangharad Park Lido, Pontypridd, Rhondda Cynon Taf \u2013 initial  support for a \u00a32.1m HLF bid, including \u00a375,000 development funding<br \/>\n<\/em>The Grade II listed lido complex, constructed in 1927, is the  largest of its kind in Wales and one of the earliest and best preserved  in the country. The project aims to restore the lido to its former glory  and once again make it a popular place for fun community activities.<\/p>\n<p>&#8211; <em>The New \u00a0Design Museum , London \u00a0\u2013 initial support for a \u00a34.9m HLF bid, including \u00a3300,000 development funding<\/em><br \/>\nThe Design \u00a0Museum in Shad Thames near Tower Bridge is home to Britain  \u2019s leading contemporary design collection which documents major  developments in design through a range of objects including furniture,  lighting, vehicles and domestic appliances. The project aims to  re-locate the museum to the former Commonwealth Institute in Kensington,  bringing the currently empty building back to life and providing a much  larger exhibition space for this important collection.<\/p>\n<p><em>&#8211; National Museum \u00a0of the Royal Navy (NMRN)<\/em><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"> <\/span><em>Telling the story of the Royal Navy, Portsmouth \u2013 initial support for a \u00a0\u00a31.2m HLF bid, including \u00a3108,600 development funding<\/em><br \/>\nThe NMRN in Portsmouth &#8216;s Historic Dockyard is one of Britain \u2019s oldest  maritime museums and its collections document 400 years of naval  heritage. The project will expand the existing 20th Century Gallery and  create a new gallery to make more of the existing collections available  to the general public, some for the first time.<\/p>\n<p>&#8211; <em>The Hexham Abbey Project, Northumberland \u2013 initial support for a \u00a31.8m HLF bid, including \u00a3175,000 development funding<br \/>\n<\/em>Hexham Abbey, originally founded during Saxon times (c.674 AD) by St  Wilfrid, still retains its 7th-century crypt.
