It saw the publication of three important books with several characteristics in common: Lewis Mumford\u2019s &#8216;The City in History&#8217;, Jane Jacobs\u2019s &#8216;The Death and Life of Great American Cities&#8217; and Gordon Cullen\u2019s &#8216;Townscape&#8217;. All three were highly influential at the time; they have all remained relevant to the present day to the extent that anyone involved in urbanism, urban politics, urban planning or\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.designingbuildings.co.uk\/wiki\/Urban_design\">urban design<\/a>\u00a0should consider them essential reading. Very readable they all are, being accessible to professional urbanists and the general reading public alike\u2026.<\/p>\n<p>This article originally appeared in <a href=\"http:\/\/ihbconline.co.uk\/context\/150\/index.html#40\">IHBC\u2019s Context 150<\/a>, published in July 2017.
