{"id":17605,"date":"2017-12-19T17:12:58","date_gmt":"2017-12-19T17:12:58","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/ihbconline.co.uk\/newsachive\/?p=17605"},"modified":"2017-12-19T17:12:58","modified_gmt":"2017-12-19T17:12:58","slug":"coventry-to-host-uk-city-of-culture-2021","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/newsblogs.ihbc.org.uk\/?p=17605","title":{"rendered":"Coventry to host UK City of Culture 2021"},"content":{"rendered":"<h3><a href=\"https:\/\/newsblogs.ihbc.org.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/12\/Coventry2021_website.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-full wp-image-17606\" src=\"https:\/\/newsblogs.ihbc.org.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/12\/Coventry2021_website.png\" alt=\"Coventry 2021 website images\" width=\"250\" height=\"207\" \/><\/a>Coventry will host the prestigious title of UK City of Culture 2021, Arts Minister John Glen has announced.<strong>\u00a0<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p>Government writes:<\/p>\n<p>The decision was made after an independent\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.uk\/government\/uploads\/system\/uploads\/attachment_data\/file\/629026\/Panel_Biographies__UK_City_of_Culture_2021.pdf\">panel<\/a>\u00a0of culture experts, chaired by television producer and screenwriter Phil Redmond, visited each of the five candidate cities before recommending Coventry as the winner.<\/p>\n<p>The bid impressed the judges with its focus on youth, diversity and the scale of impact not only in Coventry but across the UK as a whole.<strong>\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/coventry2021.co.uk\/?gclid=EAIaIQobChMIzKvk2M341wIVQ54bCh24mwhYEAAYASAAEgJaHPD_BwE\">Coventry<\/a>\u00a0will take the title from\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.hull2017.co.uk\/\">Hull 2017<\/a>, which has used City of Culture to transform its reputation as a destination for arts and culture both at home and abroad.<\/p>\n<p>It is estimated that Hull\u2019s local economy has received a \u00a360 million boost in 2017 and the city has been praised for how it has engaged local residents in the cultural programme. Nine out of 10 residents have attended, or taken part, in a City of Culture event and since it was awarded the title in 2013 it has received more than \u00a33 billion of investment\u2026.<\/p>\n<p>There have been two previous UK Cities of Culture: Derry-Londonderry in 2013 and Hull in 2017. Both cities have realised economic benefits such as increased investment and a rise in visitor numbers.<\/p>\n<p>Coventry now has three years to prepare its year-long programme of activity for 2021.
