\"\"<\/a>The IHBC\u2019s London Branch is celebrating the 50th anniversary of the Civic Amenities Act 1967, which established Conservation Areas, by looking ahead against a \u2018background of reduced local authority expenditure and continuing uncertainty over funding\u2019, in our \u2018Back to the Future\u2019 conference on 3 October, in London\u2019s Royal College of Physicians.<\/h3>\n

IHBC Director Se\u00e1n O\u2019Reilly said: \u2018Once again our London Branch is highlighting how conservation professionals take on the lessons of the past so we can better plan ahead.\u2019<\/p>\n

\u2018This year the Branch reviews and scopes out the impacts and prospects of a remarkable \u2013 and, many would argue, revolutionary \u2013 piece of legislation!\u2019<\/p>\n

\u2018As the 1967 Act re-shaped the way we can think about managing places, this event offers unique insights into how we can, and must, manage them for the future.\u2019<\/p>\n

IHBC\u2019s London Branch writes:<\/p>\n

In this, the 50th year since legislation was passed to allow the designation of conservation areas, it is appropriate for us to celebrate our achievements in establishing these areas as a key part of our historic environment. At the same time however, we should also be looking at what lessons we have learned over the years as well as challenging ourselves to consider what conservation areas are going to look like in the future.<\/p>\n

As we also celebrate the 13th of IHBC\u2019s London Conferences, we will be looking ahead, against a background of reduced local authority expenditure and continuing uncertainty over funding.\u00a0 The conference will cover a wide range of issues, including how are conservation areas perceived: does expectation match reality? How can we protect their special character from inappropriate development? What is the potential for post-war designations and how to engage communities?<\/p>\n

This conference will be of relevance to conservation officers and other heritage professionals, town planners, urban designers, engineers, surveyors, architects, and archaeologists and as usual, we intend the presentations to be of nationwide interest, not solely London-focused.<\/p>\n
