IHBC\u2019s 2017 School in Manchester\u2019s MOSI concluded with the presentations of awards, prizes and certificates to a range of winners across the IHBC\u2019s renowned Gus Astley Student Award as well as the second year of the IHBC\u2019s two Marsh Awards, for Community Contribution by retired IHBC members, and for Successful Learning.<\/h3>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p>Marsh Christian Trust trustee Charles Micklewright, presented James Archer, of the Canal and River Trust, with his Marsh Award and \u00a3500 prize for \u2018Successful Learning\u2019.\u00a0 Among other considerations, the Award judges recognise how James, a construction apprentice with the Canal &amp; River Trust specialising in masonry skills, \u2018shares his skills with others [and] has given training sessions to the team and volunteer groups around the traditional skills of mixing and working with lime mortars\u2026 has great passion for the waterways\u2026 in addition to his paid work at the Trust, he volunteers with the Waterways Recovery Group in his spare time, to help to restore disused\/neglected canals around the country\u2019.\u00a0 Having enjoyed the School programme so much, James has applied for IHBC membership.<\/p>\n<p>Ken Burley, \u2018a keen RTPI and IHBC Member\u2019, also enjoyed the Full School experience, and received his Marsh Award for his long-standing work with the South Yorkshire Buildings Preservation Trust, especially for \u2018enabling its talented members to work to their full potential to achieve a successful outcome despite the formidable challenges\u2019.<\/p>\n<p>Both James and Ken were able to take up their free places at the 2017 Annual School in Manchester, courtesy of the IHBC, and receive cash awards from the Marsh Trust in person at the IHBC\u2019s Annual School Dinner.<\/p>\n<p>Edith Gollnast received \u2018Exceptional\u2019 recognition under the Award programme, and \u00a3250, for her \u2018meticulous drawing of Oxford\u2019s buildings to illustrate a series of books on heritage walks\u2026 the proceeds of the books go towards furthering the work of the Oxford Preservation Trust.\u2019\u00a0 Unfortunately Edith was not able to attend the School.<\/p>\n<p>Gus Astley Fund Trustee and IHBC Research co-ordinator Bob Kindred MBE spoke to the successful IHBC Gus Astley Student Award submissions for 2016, on behalf of the Awards judge for the year, David Trench CBE FCIOB.<\/p>\n<p>The winner of the 2017 Student Award, Hilary Wyatt, had already spoken to her work at the IHBC\u2019s 2017 Day School\u2019s closing \u2018Spotlights\u2019 sessions earlier in the day, so many were aware of her work on historic marine infrastructure.\u00a0 The dissertation David Trench commended especially for its \u2018valuable contribution to this specialist subject\u2026 overlooked as a conservation priority.<\/p>\n<p>Hilary, then on the IHBC-recognised conservation course at Cardiff University, is now a PhD student there, developing her work programme on marine infrastructure.<\/p>\n<p>As part of a wider agenda to help conservation in her subject area, Hilary has agreed to lead a new type of volunteer \u2018Group\u2019 in the IHBC, using her Spotlight session to call for interested volunteers to her marine and coastal conservation task force and network.\u00a0 As this is still being established, anyone interested in joining should contact Carla Pianese, IHBC\u2019s Support Officer, at <a href=\"mailto:support@ihbc.org.uk\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">support@ihbc.org.uk<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>David Trench also commended the following students for their exemplary submissions:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Marc Pique i Gascon, from the IHBC-recognised conservation course at the University of Bath, for \u2018quoting the scripts and the life and times of the author\u2019s hero\u2019, Gustavo Giovannoni, \u2018and matching those with before and after photographs of good and not-so-good examples of restoration and conservation\u2019.<\/li>\n<li>Silvia Rossi, from the IHBC-recognised conservation course at the University of Central Lancashire, for her \u2018comprehensive grasp of the UK planning process\u2019, reaching \u2018the inevitable conclusion that austerity budgets have reduced resources dedicated to conservation, and this has placed strains on the system\u2019<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Bob Kindred MBE, independent conservation consultant, IHBC research consultant and trustee of the Gus Astley Fund \u2013 which has underpinned the development of the IHBC\u2019s annual Gus Astley Student Award \u2013 added to the awards for 2016 with two submissions worthy of particular commendation as Gus Astley Fund \u2018Trustee Selections\u2019 in the Student Awards programme:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Andy Atkinson, for work carried out on the IHBC-recognised conservation course at the\u00a0Anglia Ruskin University.<\/li>\n<li>Tom Nancoll, for his dissertation submitted on the IHBC-recognised conservation course at Kingston University.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>All were offered places at the 2017 School to receive their cash prizes and
