Newbridge Memorial Hall    in Caerphilly; a Tudor dwelling house known as \u2018The Walronds\u2019 in Devon; and    the 18th-century Wrest Park in Bedfordshire.<\/p>\n<p>Initial support has also been awarded for projects in Staffordshire,    Newcastle-upon-Tyne, Suffolk and Worcestershire.<\/p>\n<p>The four confirmed HLF grants are:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Abbotsford, Melrose, Scottish  \t  Borders \u2013 confirmed grant of \u00a34.8m: Abbotsford, home to one of  \t  Scotland\u2019s greatest writers, Sir Walter Scott, is located in the Scottish  \t  Borders. \u00a0HLF\u2019s grant will enable restoration of the house and its  \t  contents, including fascinating personal items relating to historic  \t  figures such as Rob Roy\u2019s sporran and Napoleon\u2019s pen case. \u00a0A new visitor  \t  centre will be discretely located in the landscape, a learning suite  \t  set-up in the basement and the Hope-Scott wing will be turned into  \t  self-catering accommodation to provide additional income.<\/li>\n<li>Newbridge Memorial Hall,  \t  Caerphilly \u2013 confirmed grant of \u00a32.9m:<br \/>\nKnown as the \u2018Memo\u2019, this Grade II* listed building is an important focus  \t  for community life in the former mining town of Newbridge. \u00a0It was created  \t  as a memorial to those who gave their lives during World War I and houses  \t  the largest ballroom in South Wales as well as a spectacular Art Deco  \t  auditorium. \u00a0A finalist in BBC Two\u2019s Restoration series, the building is  \t  now set to be fully restored as a heritage centre where visitors can learn  \t  more about the history and people of the Valleys. \u00a0A comprehensive  \t  training programme will give volunteers the skills to help run the centre.<\/li>\n<li>The Walronds, Cullompton, Devon  \t  \u2013 confirmed grant of \u00a31.7m:<br \/>\nThe Walronds is a Tudor house from the early 1600s. \u00a0It was built in the  \t  centre of bustling Cullompton, a Devonshire market town owned for many  \t  centuries by Buckland Abbey. \u00a0It is a rare intact example of an early town  \t  house and provides a unique snapshot of 17th-century living. \u00a0The project  \t  will enable full restoration of the house and ensure the ground floor and  \t  gardens are available for wider community use. \u00a0The upper floors will be  \t  converted into holiday accommodation to provide essential income for the  \t  site\u2019s long-term future. \u00a0There will be an extensive education programme  \t  for people of all ages to learn about the property and acquire  \t  conservation and volunteering skills. \u00a0The community kitchen will be the  \t  focus of a social enterprise partnership in catering for students with  \t  learning disabilities from nearby Petroc College<\/li>\n<li>Wrest Park, Silsoe,  \t  Bedfordfordshire \u2013 confirmed grant of \u00a31.14m:<br \/>\nWrest Park, charting over three hundred years of gardening history, is on  \t  a par with the great landscapes of Stowe and Stourhead and was worked on  \t  by a number of distinguished designers including Capability Brown,  \t  Nicholas Hawksmoor, William Kent and James Gibbs. \u00a0HLF\u2019s support will  \t  enable the upper gardens and path network to be restored as well as  \t  providing better visitor facilities, improved exhibitions and  \t  opportunities for volunteers. \u00a0The project will continue to build on  \t  experience gained from the HLF-supported historic and botanic gardens  \t  bursary training scheme by delivering on-the-job training for eight novice  \t  gardeners.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>HLF announce \u00a3126,900 in    development funding<br \/>\nA further four projects have received initial HLF backing today with    development funding totalling \u00a3126,900. \u00a0These projects can now move to the    next stage of their plans before a final funding decision is made:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>National Memorial Arboretum,  \t  Staffordshire &#8211; initial support for a \u00a31.5m HLF bid: Opened in 2001  \t  and comprising 150 acres of maturing trees and over 160 individual  \t  memorials, the National Memorial Arboretum was inspired by Virginia&#8217;s  \t  moving Arlington National Cemetery. \u00a0The Arboretum has become the UK&#8217;s  \t  focal point for Remembrance and commemorates those killed in the Armed  \t  Forces, the emergency services and many other individuals who have a  \t  special reason for being remembered. \u00a0The project forms the first phase of  \t  long-term plans to develop the site&#8217;s visitor facilities and focuses on  \t  what Remembrance means to people. \u00a0Plans include the recruitment and  \t  training of 70 new volunteers who will join the current 130-strong  \t  volunteer team.<\/li>\n<li>Old Newcastle: \u2018Where the Story  \t  Begins\u2019, Newcastle-upon-Tyne \u2013 initial support for a \u00a31.17m HLF bid,  \t  including \u00a343,400 development funding:<br \/>\nThe Black Gate, Castle Keep and St Nicholas Cathedral form the medieval  \t  nucleus of modern Newcastle and a massive landmark in the city. \u00a0The  \t  project aims to revitalise the 13th-century Black Gate and bring it back  \t  into public use as a heritage, education and community resource.<\/li>\n<li>St Mary at the Quay, Ipswich,  \t  Suffolk &#8211; initial support for a \u00a32.8m HLF bid, including \u00a368,500  \t  development funding: Plans to repair and adapt the medieval Grade  \t  II* listed St Mary at the Quay into a wellbeing centre have been agreed.  \t  The new centre would provide a flexible exhibition and performance space,  \t  a caf\u00e9 and IT facilities, counselling rooms and an office area.<\/li>\n<li>Croome Court, Severn Stoke,  \t  Worcestershire \u2013 initial support for a \u00a31.5m HLF bid, including \u00a315,000  \t  development funding: The National Trust plans to undertake the  \t  first phase of restoration to Croome Court, a Grade I listed 18th-century  \t  Palladian mansion near Worcester. \u00a0As Lancelot \u2018Capability\u2019 Brown\u2019s first  \t  complete landscape, this is an important site which created a new trend in  \t  garden design across the UK. \u00a0The project, devised to complement the  \t  surrounding HLF-funded regenerated parkland, will provide greater  \t  opportunities for visitors to learn about the house and grounds and will  \t  help tell the fascinating stories of the Court over two and a half  \t  centuries of history.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>HLF News:   <a href=\"http:\/\/www.hlf.org.uk\/news\/Pages\/heritagegrants_july2010.aspx\">LINK<\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The Heritage Lottery Fund (HLF) has announced confirmed funding for four projects in Scotland, Wales and England: Sir Walter Scott\u2019s home, \u2018Abbotsford\u2019, in the Borders;
