{"id":15575,"date":"2017-05-05T17:43:26","date_gmt":"2017-05-05T16:43:26","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/ihbconline.co.uk\/newsachive\/?p=15575"},"modified":"2017-05-08T16:15:37","modified_gmt":"2017-05-08T15:15:37","slug":"wealden-councillor-fined-for-illegal-alterations-to-gii-listed-home","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/newsblogs.ihbc.org.uk\/?p=15575","title":{"rendered":"Wealden Councillor fined for illegal alterations to GII listed home"},"content":{"rendered":"<h3>A Wealden DC Conservative councillor has been forced to pay out more than \u00a3100,000 after being taken to court by her own council for illegally making \u2018irreversible\u2019 alterations to her Grade II (GII) listed home.<\/h3>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p>Wealden Council writes:<\/p>\n<p>Two home-owners, including a member of the Council, have been prosecuted by Wealden District Council for causing \u201cirreversible changes\u201d to a Grade 2 listed building.<br \/>\nThe changes to the 14th Century building, known as The Priest House which is in Hellingly, included the creation of a full height entrance hall through removal of ceilings and partitions, affecting the area for where there is anecdotal evidence for a priest hole; glazing of a partition; and removal of the barley twist bannisters and associated bannister rail to the staircase and replacing them with glazed panels.<\/p>\n<p>Cllr Barby Dashwood-Morris, of the Priest House, Church Lane, Hellingly, pleaded guilty to six charges of causing works to be executed, for the alteration of the Grade II listed building, without obtaining the proper consent from the Council. Alan Proudfoot, of Goult in France pleaded guilty to four charges of making alterations to a listed building.<br \/>\n\u201cThe changes to this important listed building came to light when the owners attempted to sell the property,\u201d said Kelvin Williams, Wealden\u2019s District Council\u2019s Head of Planning and Environmental Services. \u201cOwners of historic properties should be aware of their responsibilities to the property and future generations. We will take action when necessary to protect the important heritage of our District.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The District Judge at Brighton Magistrates Court on 3 May fined Cllr Dashwood-Morris \u00a375,000 and ordered her to pay \u00a340,000 towards the Council\u2019s costs. Alan Proudfoot was fined \u00a348,000 and was also ordered to pay \u00a340,000 costs.<br \/>\nCllr Dashwood-Morris was chairman of Wealden District Council\u2019s Planning Committee South from 2011 until 2013.<\/p>\n<p>Owners of listed buildings should seek the advice of the Council\u2019s Planning Department before carrying out building or renovation work of any kind to a listed building.
